Extra baggage is right. In addition to full Marine kit, FMF Corpsmen also have to carry a ton of medical equipment. Daniel tells me that (good news) during his tour in Iraq (Jan-Sept.) they had plenty of top-notch equipment for the "docs".

Today, I hope to hear from Jim for called this past weekend and informed me that they are speaking with their detailers for orders. He wants to head to Camp Lujuene for he wants to be East Coast Sailor for he likes the South (He has the desire to follow his Southern Roots of his Dad even though he was born and raised in Alaska; however, his grandparents live near by. Too he likes NC BBQ even though his hertiage is half Confedirate and half Yanky (Mom). Although, as his mom I prefer he hang on the west coast, so I can use my AK Airline miles to visit him or send his brother.

He also said, they have been the test mode these past two weeks and will begin clinicals soon. Sounds like they are ready to move on and to be able to put all their knowledge and work into play. He also, mentioned the Navy Ball was fun and he and a number of his buddies hung out and throughly enjoyed the food and music.

Speaking of the blue cammies, they do look sharp and a far cry from the dungrees that we had to wear when I was in. Prior to his departure, I informed him he will have to manage two sea bags since he will be issued a USN as well as a Marine issue, even though most of his gear will never be worn. However, most folks forget as long as you are in, one must have a complete bag at all times. Otherwise sea bag inspections can be an enlighting experience; expensive as well. With all his gear there will not be much room for his shoes; he owns and wears more shoes than I have owned in a life time.
Well better run for now and direct my efforts for the day to the Air Force.

Good thing about Marine desert cammies is that everyone looks the same (also why now corpsmen and officers carry M-16s). Makes it harder for the bad guys to tell who the officers, noncoms and corpsmen (their preferred targets) are. The "subdued" insignia also help mask who is who. I can testify that it works. When Daniel returned to Pendleton (late evening) I actually missed him amongst all the Marines even though I was looking for his PO cap badge specifically. for a pic, if you are curious, see the very short clip on my page.

Randy - Thank you for info. What's stumps? Would like to visit but not in summer! Imagine it's too hot. Your son in blue cammies?
Comment by Natalie S. on October 15, 2009 at 8:04pm
Cindy - Yeah, the cammies were a big difference from their dress whites or blues. Can't imagine what they'll look like if they ever have to buy and wear their blue cammies! Guess as Marine Corpsmen they won't have to wear the blue cammies just buy them? Had to laugh --- Yes, it is very amazing what they will do other places that we'd have a heck of a time getting them to do at home!

Devin started the processing in yesterday afternoon at 29. So if I understand him right, when assigned to the hospital, they do a rotation of the different areas and then after several weeks, they get assigned to one area in the hospital?? So he won't know what section until then?

Anita ~ I thought there'd be a lot of 'chatting' from the mom's here. It didn't happen....a few gents and that was it. As you can tell by the Navy Dads Admin says "guys don't chat". Morgan has yet to leave for his first deployment so I do understand what you are feeling. I'm having those same thoughts myself. Welcome aboard and glad to have you on this site! Where is your son currently stationed?

Bob....did I read right? He drove to 29 Palms? What kind of vehicle did he get? Gosh, seems like he was just arriving at Camp Pendleton! Is his final duty station at the hospital on 29 Palms? Morgan's there in the desert for the next 2 or 3 weeks then back again in January for a month.

James's Mom ~ I didn't even know about the Corpsman Ball until it was over! Morgan's girlfriend was so mad he didn't tell her. I guess there's another one coming up either at the end of the month or middle of next month. Do you happen to know when the Marine Corpsman Ball is?!

Daniel ~ When Morgan was home between stations last Christmas he wore his uniform the first few days. He was hoping to receive a free meal from another patron. They were free any...thanks to his parents!

Natalie ~ It was a little strange to see them in Marine cammies knowing they were Navy. Morgan's PIR was the middle of August, beautiful weather then. Weather was very pleasant. He did end up shoveling snow for 5 hrs between HM graduation and coming home for Christmas at GL. No way could we get him to shovel here!

Bob -- FMTB graduation did go well!! weather was nice! the guys all looked so amazing. nice not to be freezing like at for grad at GL!! smaller group by far of course. but so neat to see so many corpsmen. very nice and made you proud. they all looked so happy. i'm sure to be past this part and onto their next place. but too a pride in what they've chosen to do and have learned to do. my son said it was nothing like the GL corpsmen grad. wish i could have seen that one too. but we just can't be everywhere....

Eric just graduated from FMTB today, just called and said that all went well. He's now driving up to Twentynine Palms and checking in there. His grandma, uncle, and two cousins were able to be in attendance. We're very proud of him!

They look great in their dress blues. My son took a date to Galatoire's Restaurant (excellent, but pricey) in New Orleans last year in his "crackerjack" and discovered that another patron had picked up the tab.

Got a call from my son last night and tommrow night they will be styling and profiling at the Navy Ball in Great Lakes. They selected 300 from the base to attend which will include a nice dinner and dance. Yeah, a nice break from the chow hall and barracks life. As his mom, I just hope he remembers his manners. Yes, he is all excited and I asked him to send photo of him and his friends in their Dress Blues. For him it is like attending prom.
