Daniel, Thank you Brian told me that advancing to E5 right now is very difficult. hurry up, study & wait yes-- but it makes this father proud to see how hard they strive to succeed --then do!

David, congratulations to your son on getting his "Crow". Daniel has now passed the E-5 test for the second time, but he thinks he will not have enough points to be promoted until he finishes his present deployment in Sep't. Hurry up & wait.

Today our son was frocked E4, this was his 3rd try, passed both times before, but today he did advance. He is in just 2years last month. we are very proud of the new petty officer

Thanks Kevin. What you said about the promotions make sense. There have been three sailors to take the petty officer 1 test. Third time for one of them. None passed. Something was mentioned about no promotions. However; at the same time, there were newly graduated FMTB's that took the petty officer 1 test and passed. I don't know...hurry, hurry, wait.

Frocked meant something totally different to me...as a female! That's really cool. I know you are very proud of him.

Cindy- when a sailor gets frocked (moves from E3 to E4) the Eagle he is awarded is known as a "crow" because it is black and resembles said bird......as per Eric's "crow" shown here

Wow! What is a crow?

Bob ~ Has your son started his job yet? Morgan was the head admin at the hospital. Hated it. Wanted to be working in the hospital with people, not shoveling paperwork. First time he's ever had tension headaches. Will be interested to hear what your son thinks of CP. I had the unfortunate opportunity to sit in the hospital er on base. Nothng serious, but Morgan was concerned enough he wanted to go. It's a big thing when he wants to make a trip to the dr! It's a lllloooonnnngggg way from the entrance and the corpsman are very separated from the Marines. If he doesn't have a car or a good buddy with a vehicle, he'll be spending a lot of time on base. Public buses are available, but not if he needs to get groceries. They won't be doing any pt while waiting to class up, so if he wants to continue to stay in shape, he'll need to do it on his own. When he does class up, he'll be in the 1st - 3rd platoon, depending on his last name. If his name is towards the mid to end of the alphabet he'll be doing a lot of pt. Oceanside is beautiful...at least the surrounding area around the base. The beach isn't too far from the entrance to CP. If he gets a chance, he has to eat at Ruby's. Prices range from $8 on up. It's good food and located at the end of the pier. Everyone is dressed in 40's waiter/waitressing outfits and they serve shakes the old way...in the tin cup they make it in. There's a small pizza place close to the pier, can't remember the name of it, but they serve a 28" pizza. It's huge! Lots of little shops that give military discounts. A movie theater. There's a lot to do in that area. They are big on the Marines, so you won't see a whole lot of Navy stuff. The PX has nothing Navy. Your son will have to go to the south side of San Diego in Coronado to the NEX's. There's one on Coronado Base and the 2nd one is on the 32nd St. Base in Coronado.

Kevin ~ There might be a web site to that base, but from my experience with the CP site, they don't offer a lot of indepth info. What an experience he will have working with 53 Marines and congrats to him for the promotion! You were in Hawaii...I'm jealous! My friend's daughter is stationed at Kaneohe Bay. She just got back from a 6 mth deployment to the AF base in northern japan.

Kevin, I know nothing personally, but there is a description at marine corps News: www.marine-corps-news.com/2007/09/23_begins_pta_training_cycle_o.htm

and a more general one at globalsecruity.org.
Sounds tough but useful!

Thank you Daniel, I very much appreciate your comments. I'm glad to hear that it's a work-related assignment and not some "working party" detail, which had occurred when I was in the Navy on Shore Det for a month while I was in the Navy. I can't tell you how many laps we made around NAS Alameda picking up trash, painting curbs and whacking weeds. Again, thank you for the info.

I don't know how "personalized" the PSI instruction is at Pendleton, so this reply may not be useful, but my son went to Lejeune right after A School, about 3 weeks before his FMSS ( = FMTB now) in May 2007 and spent the time doing some organized PT along with some classwork, but found that the most useful thing was being assigned to various jobs at the Naval Hospital, where he took his first "real" blood, helped deliver his first baby etc.
