Good information to know in reference to CA...I heard they are fairly expensive. Also when you leave make sure you clean your slate for they have hit folks who are up here for taxes for years spent in CA. Wow it is surprising AL will not allow you to own a car before you are 21, I know my boys would not find that appealing. Up here like WY/MT most kids are driving at 15 or younger on the dirt road and driving a four wheeler as old as 5 as long as they are to operate with out tipping it over. Oh yes congrats to our new DOCs mine graduated in Dec (Dec 21, 2012), and they now have him running. It is a good thing for he is busy and happy (he is not one to set idle other wise he is quite challenging). Since he has done well and is from AK they are shipping him off to cold weather training in CA this next month. His response is Mom it is not cold in CA but if I were to come home to train we can refer it as cold weather. Yes, it has been -30 these past few weeks and he would be happy..Both my big AK Salmon Frys have said they miss the cold weather but then mention if they are riding their bikes the conversation changes quickly. Lastly thanks Gary for the CA info. Speaking of warm weather in 30 days plan to visit my old ship mates who were also stationed on NavFac Adak (passive sonar). Twenty 25 yrs in passing and gee time sure does fly by when you are having fun (raising future Sailors) and glad I served for my skills that I learned clearly assisted me in raising two strong willed HMs. Too now they understand my thought process and many terms that I still use; like get the house squared away and I mean ASAP..Yes, I remember well when I had to ask my chief what ASAP meant and he looked at me with frown (What) and then provided me with the answer. So when my two decided to enlist I knew they would do well for they were pre programed to the Navy way of life.
@ LYLE: I would suggest you have all your "ducks in a row" with the vehicle. Certified/notarized copies of the title and registration and a notarized letter from you giving him permission to drive the vehicle, and of course insurance coverage, otherwise he will have trouble getting a base vehicle sticker.
We got two different graduation dates from our son too, because of the holiday break.
Tell your son "Good Luck" from an old HM.
My son Eric graduated with honors from Class 250 on 16JAN13. He is now at Camp Pendelton waiting to class up for FMTB, then to 29 Palms with the 1st MarDiv. Got choked up when I heard him and his class recite the HM Oath.
Today he commented he got called "DOC" by some Marines today and it seemed to hit home what the brotherhood really is. He wasn't quite sure he deserved it since he isn't an 8404 yet. I told him that every HM is "DOC" to the Marines. Very proud of him !!
@ Kyle Kritzberger: Just a thought, find out if he will be required to meet any CA requirements if he keeps his vehicle registered in his home state of record. I kept my WI plates and never had to go through any FL requirements when I was stationed there.
@ rog: Watch METC on facebook, the graduation dates for each class will be seen there. I saw 2/21 and 2/28 as graduation dates, doesn't go into March quite yet.
So my son is graduating from Fort Sam as an HM. I'm trying to nail him down to a date for the graduation. He says it's either Feb. 22, 27, or March 1. Does anyone know of a place to find the dates so I can actually plan.... I'm beginning to wonder if it's my son, or the Navy that isn't sharing.
