My son is at Camp Pendleton and begins FMTB next Monday.  He's both excited and anxious.  He's been getting in great shape (best shape I've ever seen him in) but says it's the mental part that will be the hard part.  So he thinks.  His mother and I are very proud of him however.

My grandson has 2 1/2 weeks left of boot camp then off to "A" school in Texas. We are going to Great Lakes for graduation on Aug 5. May God Bless our grandson and our troops.

I'm not very familiar with the SAR part in the USN to be truthful, but my boy went FMF. I am also a Paramedic and Asst. Chief. My oldest boy is a FF/Paramedic and my youngest is Corpsman with FMF. He loves what he does, and it provides alot of options not as specific as SAR. He said his next assignment/deployment may be with a MEU (Marine Expiditonary Unit). They basically are a "911" type detachment where on a ship and respond wherever/however needed. Could be damn near anything. Tours typically can last 10-12 months. Provides alot of diversity. So with FMF, you could be on a ship, at a base hospital overseas, or stateside at a base hospital.

Good luck to him. DEP is a good way to go. And like Randall, I will also pass on to my boy in the field and see what he says. Could be a while before I hear back from him though! He is in Afg.

Good morning Paul, passed to your question to my son in the field,

has has been in 4 + yrs and was a firefighter before goin in to the

Navy and became a corpsman...his answer :

Get c school guaranteed before he goes in n ask for a bonus first of all. Then he goes to corps school, aerospace med tech then SAR. pretty sure  that's still the pipeline. It ain't no joke tho

Can anyone tell me what it takes to become a Search and Rescue Corpsman? My son is DEP, scheduled for a ship date of Jan 3rd. He is interested in either the SAR or FMF duty. I am a fire captain/paramedic, so I am familiar with SAR.

That's terrific, Mark! Congrats to your son and tell him welcome back to the States. Thank him for all his service overseas. Glad to hear he made it thru the earthquake.
