crystal, hope your long weekend was good. i could use a couple more days to rest. i've been ill and had a funeral(19 year old). did hear from my sailor, made me feel better to hear her voice but had to try and comfort her half way round the world @ funeral, she's missed quit a few since leaving but this one being a class mate.....has really thrown her into a tailspin. and it doesn't help she's lossing 2 of her officers this next week. can't wait to hear about your weekend and your sailors plain ticket! i'm happy for you all, i'll count down with you, know you're always in my prayers. gotta run, work ya know.

Crystal,
I can totally can relate having been enlisted in both the USN/AF, esp. now working with management as civ. I have also mentioned to both my boys to become officers rather going enlisted, as well. However you can only tell them so much and then the rest they have to learn on their own. With only a few months in the system my oldest son already sees the light. Yet a hitch as an enlisted as you know will always make a great leader esp. when the circumstances are challenging. I wish your son the best.

I think he will get out in 2012 and go to college at Penn State. We are looking into the veterans house for him. He has wanted to go to Penn State since he was two years old. He has 3 years under his belt and tried to cross rate a year ago. To many obsticals in his way. He joined the navy as an E2 because of college credits an being an Eagle Scout. To be honest I want him to get out go to college and then he can go back in as an officer if he wishes. As a sailor once upon a time I never wanted him to enlist. I told him college first the be an officer. He understands why now. His Dad is Navy retired. We have lived it and hoped our son would be an officer. His dad was and AD. ....Mom was hospital corpsman used my GI bill for Nursing School.

Crystal, making rank in the military now days is tough since there are so many in the system. 1986 was very similar but in 88 they offered a buy out to the E-4-5s which many took. As result the system’s leadership lost much of its structure. It is all cyclic and tightly intertwined with the needs of the Navy. The way the economy is today and will be for the next few years, I would highly suggest that your son stay in or shift to the reserves (he has the option to return to active duty and too he will have pts contributing to his retirement). One can survive on the economy it is called budgeting and living with your means. 20 yrs down the road then he will wish he had stayed in like many of us wish we had finished out our careers. The other option is for your son to consider to cross rate into a new rate which is less manned. Like I have always told my sons if there is a will there is a way.

Hello everyone, I heard yesterday it would be about another ten days before the advancement exam results are out. I have a son who has passed twice before but not advanced due to overmanned rate. He has does many things to better his overall score. I pray he makes it this time. He is talking about not re enlisiting. He needs to be able to afford to live on shore when he re enlists. Times are tough all over.

My wife is a member of Navy for Moms. There have been a group of Moms writing letters on Todds behalf. One of them just called and said that Senator Jon Kyl's office just called her. Thank you everyone known and unknown who have reached out to our son. Thank you!

Just when you think you are out of options and there is no hope God in his wisdom provides. I can't believe that the offices of Senator John McCain and Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick of the Great State of Arizona just called. Talk about goosebumps. You write letters, you send emails but I never expected anyone to respond. How could they be concerned with our life? This confirms for me that we live in the greatest country on Earth. Their aides have said they will start an inquiry into Todd's discharge. They can not directly affect the outcome. After looking over the information they can at best ask that Todd's discharge be reconsidered. If after this he is still recommended to be discharged we can live with that. We did what we could. We sent his medical records to legal today. They contradict the findings of the Navy Doctors. There is a test available that would conclusively state does he have AngioEdema or not. We hope they will run that test. We will keep you posted.

Thank you everyone for your kind words regarding our son. What we have been told is that the Navy doctors are saying he has Angio Edema. We know it can range from a mild allergic reaction to something quite severe. We understand that there is a specific test to determine if you do indeed have it. We want to know did they do that test? Have they made an assumption that that is what he has? Surely he can do something else in the Navy.It probably doesn't matter in the end. We don't want him to be a liablity to himself or his shipmates. He is meeting with legal today. He has filed an appeal. We are probably holding off the inevitable but we are praying for a miracle. It is gut wrenching to see everyones story playing out before us. PIR, A school, Power school, etc. Our flight was booked for graduation. All of our imagined moments seem to be gone. We know that in the end this will have been for the best. It is awfully hard to see it right now. We are so thankful for each of you and your childrens willingness to serve.
