I wish that I had names. He didn't give me any. I don't know if it is protocol. But he did tell me that he felt sorry for one that had twin girls by the age of 5 and a little boy age 4. Coty said that he was the one that handed out the mail for them. That would be so sad to be the one to give out mail and to never get any yourself.

My son for some reason my son was one who wasn't getting mail. I sent letters as soon as I had gotten' his address, but for some reason he didn't get them until around his 7th week of boot camp. When he made his first phone call he said he had gotten' really home sick and when the letters finally came he had around 20 of them, because I wrote him every couple of days just to tell him what was going on, and it helped me also. But I'll say this to people like cotysmom. My son had never been away from home for over a few days, and all those weeks of boot camp seem like forever, but it's only 9 weeks. After your son or daughter graduates you will be able to give him a cell phone. They have some tight resrictions on them and thier use, but I now talk to my son every day. He's put in for leave on 4th of July weekend. It'll be the first time he's been home since February. I can't wait.

I know how alone you feel. My boy is only 18 and I had never been without him for all those years. Now, he's gone and he has become his own man. When you go see Coty graduate everything you're feeling now will turn to pride that will bust your chest open. Believe me, it's worth the wait.

Wow Kathleen that is the first I have ever heard of a division being punished over mail. . .Apparently it depends on who your Petty Officer's and Chief's are for your division. My son's division had understanding ones :). I am so sorry to hear that about your son, I can't believe he would be punished for something he had no control over!?

He called yesterday. I thought that I would fall apart but I waited until he hung up. It was great to hear his voice. The first thing that he said was Hi Mom, I love you. I know that you all can probably remember when you got your first call. I don't think that I will ever forget it. He was upbeat and said that he felt sorry for some of the others that wasn't getting mail. That is so sad. I work in a nursing home and see the same thing here and it just breaks your heart.

Christy; Not to correct Michele; but musical cards are frowned upon in bc (I guess w/the exception of b/days). The first card I sent Jonis was a musical one & they made him dismantel it & told to make sure it didn't happen again. I have heard stories of recruites recieving them & the whole DIV being punished for it. So; I'd really think twice about sending those unless it is his b/day.

Welcome to Single Parents Christy! Yes single parents have struggles that only single parents can understand. Not having a partner to lean on, confide in, or laugh/cry with is our reality. This however makes us who we are. . .confident, resourceful, independent, and most of all survivors :). I have to confess bootcamp was a rollercoaster of emotion, new territory for me. The best advise I could give you is to stay busy and when you get a letter from Coty enjoy, don't think too far into it (if he sounds down) they all have their point of weakness, but know soon after he will regain his confidence and pride. A little secret, send musical cards! my son's division had a couple of birthdays during bootcamp (including him) and they used the musical cards to entertain themselves hehehe.

Don't be afraid to ask anything.. .several of us have already went through bootcamp, A school, C school, Fleet designation, 1st Cruise, and others.

God Bless our Sailors & our Group!

Kathlenn,
I also raised both my children without their father. My son was 6 months
old and I was pregnant with my daughter when I kicked him out because I found out that he had a girlfriend. He visited until Michael was 2 year old. Nothing again until he was 16,then took off when I asked for child support.

My youngest son Jonis joined the Navy 2.5 yrs ago. He is now in Japan for the 2nd time & on the 2nd ship. He is currently serving on the USS Blue Ridge. I feel like a Dad b/c I raised both my sons w/o their fathers being involved... This Navy life is a strange life that my Sailor has chosen for us.
