At MEPS in San Diego. He hasn't shared yet when he leaves for basic, his job will be Missile Technician. I work in the South Bay, live in the Inland Empire.

Here is sailor with Gpa's 90 year old brother (retired Navy).  Gpa was Air Force.

And here's gpa's ashes.  He wanted to be buried with his "nuts & bolts in a mason jar".  So that is what we did!  He has rows and rows (and rows) of jars in the garage filled with nuts & bolts LOL!

We had the funeral for my step dad (Air Force) on Friday.  It was really nice - at the Riverside National Cemetery.  My sailor wore his uniform (he's home on leave) and we thought we were just going to have him carry in the ashes (which we put in a mason jar and filled with nuts & bolts 'cuz that's what grandpa wanted!). When we arrived they told us that protocol would not allow sailor to carry the ashes but they would have him involved in the ceremony.  They took him aside and gave him some instructions and told him where to stand.  We weren't sure what he would be doing but that was fine with us.  They played taps, the Air Force Honor Guard did the gun salute and then they did the flag ceremony.  Normally they would present the flag to whomever you want (my mom in this case) but instead they presented the flag to my sailor and then my sailor presented it to my mom.  He also had to say some stuff - "On behalf of the President of the United States, the Department of the Air Force, the US Navy and a grateful nation, we offer this flag for the faithful and dedicated service of grandpa.  Please accept this flag as our appreciation".  Then he said "I love you grandma" and boy we all cried.  I asked him after how he remembered what to say since this wasn't planned out ahead of time & he said that's pretty much how the last 2 years of nuke school have been - they tell them something, they repeat it back once and then they remember it - just like that!  It was a very nice service.  I'll post some pictures - unfortunately they aren't the best as the lighting wasn't too good, but you can get the idea.

Thanks for posting that link Stephen. Still haven't seen his W2 yet. I'll give them (IRS) a call and and listen to what they have to say.

Reading these posts about taxes has me wondering about my sons tax situation. He's on the USS CARL VINSON and they won't be back in time for tax season. This is his first deployment and we're new to this. My question, Is there something we need to do here such as request an extension for him or will they take care of this from the ship?
Thanks, Dave.

Jim C - thanks for that info. Our son spent the last year in NY. This is good to know - I will pass it on to him.
