Welcome to the group Paul!

When you mentioned the winter weather in GL I thought of walking in a freezer heheh... I remember our PIR was in NOV and it's chilly but manageable. Glad to hear you got the "I'm here" call. Expect the "kid in a box" and the form letter to follow. And yes PIR seems like forever but will be there before you know it.

As of 2014, my son is in his third year of service and is currently in C-School at NATTC in PCOLA..

Good Morning Paul! Yes "processing" will be something your son will ALWAYS remember, albeit in a blur.  Our son, who was and is still, very committed to his Navy decision, shared with me, "Dad, there were moments when I thought to myself, what have I done!"  That was a year ago and he's now wrapping up A-School in Monterey, so this too shall pass, like a kidney stone. 

Letters from home are, as you may have already heard, VITAL.  We purchased dozens of funny postcards (www.zazzle or www.hallmark), prepared per-labeled addresses and made sure he got two to four "posts" each week.  The funny ones he passed around and made for "good times".  He really appreciated the cards (which I still send him even though we have seen him about ten times while at A-School in CA.

About the COLD...frankly, I don't see how folks live in that environment (our family has been in California since 1830's so we do have a bias).  Our Son's PIR was in early January 2013 and it was brutal; especially watching all the recruits march around the grounds in the cold, but it too is like a kidney stone.

I am new to the site and glad to join all the proud Cali's. My son just started boot camp this week. We got his scripted call Wednesday night. Processing days begin so we don't know his division yet but hopefully soon. Thanks to this website we kind of know what to expect. His culture and world is changing for the good. Although, I am not sure if he is going to enjoy winter weather in the Great Lakes. He is good kid and we are certainly proud he choose to join the Navy. We are looking forward to seeing him at his PIR when he completes his training. A big thanks go out to all our men and women and their families who serve our country. Even though he has been gone for only a few days, I am beginning to deal with realization of his new adventure.

Come and join us to celebrate Naval Base San Diego Galley's Martin Luther King Jr's special meal on 15 January 2015 from 1100-1230. It will be open for all Active Duty Military, Military Dependents, Retirees and DoD Civilians. Meal cost is $5.55

We've been fortunate enough to have spent Christmas Eve with our son. To echo Stephen, it most definitely is an emotional roller coaster ride to say the least.

He's headed for "C" School in PCOLA this week...

Dave, if you're planning to be there for the Vinson homecoming, Coronado is super awesome! Ask your son about the Navy Lodge there at NAS Coronado. We loved it there and will have our Sailor book us there again on our next visit...

Hope everyone has been enjoying the holidays. It's been different for us since my son is serving aboard the USS Carl Vinson but we did get to talk to him during Christmas. He's well and his spirits are high so that makes me very happy. He's been to Singapore and twice to Dubai now. He has matured so much since he first left to boot camp last February. Happy New Year to everyone!

Gary - That's awesome that your sailor surprised you!  Hope you all had a great time ;-)

I agree - it would be nice if Disney (& other theme parks) would waive the black out days for military personnel since they don't always have the luxury of planning way in advance....

We got a text from sailor last night - still no orders.  Hopefully soon though!

B'sNukemom&dad⚓️Prototype1401S8G Thanks for sharing this! Our Sailor surprised me when he showed up at California Adventure over the weekend. Apparently, everyone else knew (including his sisters) but me heheh! Maybe in the future Disney would do without "blockout" dates for service members...
