About the Arctic Gator...

Homeport: Naval Base San Diego, CA

USS Anchorage (LPD-23), the seventh San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Anchorage, Alaska and the first U.S. Navy ship to be commissioned in Alaska.

The San Antonio-class is the first class of ship equipped with a state-of-the-art fiber-optic Shipboard Wide Area Network (SWAN). Its design provides computer and network access linking every manned space on the ship, to include troop/crew berthing. The SWAN’s design also allows for future growth over the life of the ship as technology advances. Over 760 SWAN drops (i.e. access points) will support computer workstations or other uses throughout the ship.

Anchorage's keel was laid down on September 24, 2007 at the Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans, Louisiana, then owned by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. The ship was launched on February 12, 2011. She was christened two months later, May 14 - the first ship christened by Huntington Ingalls Industries since Northrop Grumman spun off its shipbuilding divisions as a separate company. The ship's sponsor is Annette Conway, wife of former Marine Corps Commandant General James T. Conway. The ship was formally delivered and accepted by the US Navy on September 17, 2012.

On November 21, 2012 the Pre-Commissioning Unit Anchorage (LPD 23) moored pierside for the first time at her homeport in San Diego during a homecoming ceremony.

The Anchorage was commissioned on May 4, 2013 in her namesake city ...

Underway Recovery Tests for NASA's Orion Spacecraft...
Published by Klaus Schmidt on Mon Aug 4, 2014 2:26 pm via: NASA

A test version of NASA’s Orion spacecraft floats inside the well deck of the U.S.S. Anchorage on Aug. 2, 2014, during recovery tests off the coast of California. A combined NASA and U.S. Navy team practiced recovery techniques over the weekend, in preparation for Orion’s first trip to (and return from) space in Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1) in December.

Orion is the exploration spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to destinations not yet explored by humans, including an asteroid and Mars. It will have emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. After traveling 3,600 miles into space on the uncrewed EFT-1, Orion will return to Earth at a speed of 20,000 miles per hour and endure temperatures near 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit before landing in the Pacific Ocean.

USS Anchorage wraps up RIMPAC, San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Amphibious transport dock USS Anchorage (LPD 23) returned to port after participating in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2014 Exercise off the coast of San Diego, July 28.

More than 400 personnel from Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru and the U.K. joined Anchorage Sailors for RIMPAC.

Anchorage acted as the afloat sea-base, supporting Commander of Task Group 177.1 (CTG), and served as the operating platform for a multinational mine countermeasures (MCM) group that included airborne mine countermeasures (AMCM), underwater vehicles, divers and marine mammals.

During the exercise, embarked Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14 (HM-14) conducted AMCM, while Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Mobile Unit 1 and 11 performed MCM operations.

"HM-14's participation in RIMPAC is essential and beneficial for many reasons," said Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Grover, officer in charge for HM-14. "It allows the squadron to execute cross-country flights, conduct shipboard operations, integrate with the international MCM Staff Combined Task Force (CTF) 177.1, participate as part of the MCM triad to meet squadron unit level training goals, execute AMCM mission tasking, and remind the larger Navy as a whole what the HM community and the MH-53E Sea Dragon is capable of accomplishing."

Lt. Cmdr. Erich Frandrap, executive officer of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11, said the exercise demonstrated the inherent flexibility of MCM forces.

"RIMPAC 14 is a unique opportunity for multiple MCM assets from several countries to all come together to jointly tackle a difficult task: finding mines and ensuring safe access for friendly forces," he said.

Commissioned in May 2013, this was the first time Anchorage participated in RIMPAC. Anchorage commanding officer Cmdr. Joel Stewart said the exercise was a great opportunity to get the ship and crew integrated into the fleet.

"We've come in a big way and proved that, even though we haven't done a maiden deployment yet, Anchorage is a force multiplier and will certainly bring a lot of value to 3rd Fleet or anywhere else the Navy needs the ship to conduct its mission," he said.

Coast Guard and Navy crews work together to assist ailing fisherman...

July 21, 2014

SAN DIEGO — U.S. Coast Guard and Navy crews worked together to medically evacuate a 37-year-old man who reportedly suffered a seizure aboard a fishing vessel 23 miles off the coast of San Diego, Monday morning.

The crew of the 47-foot charter fishing boat Joanna requested assistance for the man at 9:05 a.m., on VHF-FM radio channel 16.

A 45-foot Response Boat was launched from Coast Guard Station San Diego to conduct the medevac. The USS Anchorage’s crew, who were operating in the area, also dispatched a doctor and corpsman to provide medical assistance to the fisherman.

Once on scene, the Coast Guard boat crew brought the patient and Navy medical personnel on board and transported them to Coast Guard Sector San Diego. The man was transferred to emergency medical personnel for further care at 11:15.
