What Were Your Feelings When Your Sailor Joined The Navy:
Best thing he could do, I think, I just did a little research and seen what my son will be doing. He is going to be a navy diver which shouldn't be that bad for him seeing he already has his scuba license. He also signed to be a S.E.R.E. from the video I seen on this he will be eating things he doesn't really eat so the 2 lbs he wanted to lose will not be a problem. Maybe his new nickname will be bear as in Bear Grills, man verses wild the television show.

Hi Gregg, I would imagine you have got your "I'm a sailor " call by now, and are making plans for PIR Friday. Buck goes through battlestations Thursday night, and we are waiting for the call on Friday. I just hope he remembers my cell phone number, as I will be at work. Have a safe trip and congratulate your son for us. If you find a great place for pizza or steak, be sure to let me know. Buck said he wants to eat both next week when he gets a little freedom. Later, Tom

Gregg, Thanks for the message. Just got a letter today from my son Carl. He is on USS Hopper, Div 169. Looking at the possible PIR dates, I am assuming his graduation date will be April 24th. I'll still wait to confirm that. Carl

Gregg - have two notes-
first- everyone will go out of their way to get mail to the right recurit at whatever address- having the incorrect street should not be a negative factor.

second- your son probably won't get his mail until he is a couple of weeks into the program-- mail is used as a reward for the division coming together and starting to think and act as a unit. Don't get worried if YOU don't hear from him as well....remember that the first couple of weeks are used to help break the ties to home and that they are only allowed, in the first part of boot to write on Sundays...meaning Thursdays are the most likely days for you to receive mail. Also remember that mailing supplies are only available at the NEX meaning he has to get the ok to walk there and back and have the money to purcahse those supplies...advise in your mails to send either postage paid postcards or stamped envelopes to make it easier for him to send you mail.

Hello Gregg,
Bobby's tentative PIR date is 4/17. He was processed in Monday and we were able to get his mailing address on Tuesday from his recruiter. With it being so quick, we are a little concerned that we have the wrong one. I went on the GL website and tried to verify it, but according to the recruiter the construction that has been going on has changed the street locations. He's in the USS Hopper ship 3, I guess unless someone here has the correct street for verification, were on a wing and a prayer. Give our best to your son and keep your chin up.

Welcome to NavyDads Gregg! I'm sure you'll find the site as fun and useful as I have. Explore and make some friends, add your comments to a discussion or two, read the postings in the various groups-- even start one or two. I have! If you have any questions or concerns about your sailor and what he is going through...ask! I'm sure someone here will have the answer or can point you in the right direction to find out. I'm lucky enough to have two sailors- my son Eric is on the second half of a seven-month cruise on the carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and my daughter Kat recently returned from a seven-month cruise on the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). And Gregg this is a great place to brag about your sailor as well! So join in and let us know how Scott is doing!

As a parent of a sailor currently or soon to be at Great Lakes you'll have many questions about what your son is going through. Thanks to one of our members we have two excellent videos that you can access from the Video area on the NavyDads.com main page: New Bootcamp 1 of 2 and New Bootcamp 2 of 2. These videos will answer many of your questions and concerns and will give you a better understanding of how the United States Navy transforms our children into sailors!

Be sure to spend some time in the Bootcamp group- there are many questions and answers available to help you understand what your sailor is going through. And as PIR draws closer, be sure to spend some time going through the PIR-Tips, Hints and Helps group- we’ve tried to assemble some tips and suggestions to make your sailor's PIR more enjoyable. And thank you for your service to our great country. Best Regards- Paul

Gregg, Welcome Aboard! I found navyformoms in searching for answers to my son's future. I just knew their had to be a site for dads like n4m's but I was wrong. So I started this site so us dads would also have a place to call home. I'm new at this and I hope this site will benefit fathers that come behind us. So jump right in share concerns, join groups, share info, and show off your sailor. I'm so glad to find out their are so many proud Navy dads just like myself. I hope this site benefits you and your family throughout your sons journey in the Navy. Thank Scott for his service for me and yours as well. Thanks again for joining us.
Sincerely, EG
