Navy Dads

Hey all new here;

My son leaves for basic on Monday, He has told me that if he wasn't issued it he won't need it, I understand this being Prior AF but there are some things that just makes life easyier.

We have already set up a Credit union account for him, and I plan on sending him with a little cash just in case, Also plan on a 200 min calling card, plenty of envalopes and stamps.

From the experienced out there what else does he need to take with him?  Just trying to get all the ducks in a row before monday.

Thanks

JG

ROFLMAO!!!!   He has a cell phone but we were planning on bringing it up with us when we come for graduation. That way he can use it in Sub School and A school.  Just want to make sure he has everything.  Heck If he could put up with me for the last 18 yrs I think he can handle 8 wks of Basic.  Is it Basic or does the navy call it something else???   LOL

Sounds like you have it pretty much covered. Didn't send anything else with our daughter either. She did take her cell phone and she sent text as she was entering base, and she called from it later that night then sent it home with her box of clothes.
Being selected for such an honorable duty could be a good thing or a bad thing,   LOL   I told the son that It's better to keep a low profile and slip under the radar so to speak and it will be easy, However being that he is like 6'4" I think they will not likely miss him in a lineup   ROFLMAO!!!

Yea, we'll take her cell phone and laptop back up to graduation so she can use them while on liberty. I'm sure she is going through facebook withdrawls anyway.  One thing, her recruiter told us the night she was leaving to stop and see him in a day or two as he might have her mailing address and sure enough he had it to pass onto me and the wife so we were able to fire off mail right away. Angie got so much mail that first week she was nominated for Petty Officer of the mail. she took the required test and passed. She said most of the other girls didn't get mail till AFTER they sent home the contact information sheet they all have to do. She said it did help to get mail so often and early.

Anybody know about general hygene supplies?  or are they issued too?
Maybe I'll suggest that to him, he was in the drama club at school and plays a good guitar.  I remember the ones that got selected for what we called Beat and Blow had it pretty easy as compaired to the rest of us.  Not sure if he'll go for it or not.  We'll see

Well her brother who went to Army boot camp at Ft. Knox had warned her it's best to keep to yourself and a low profile. Of course he's super quiet by nature, and she isn't and doesn't get embarrased by attention like her brother would. Recruiter also told her when asked after getting there if anyone can sing or has performing experience then to get your hand in the air right away as you might get selected to a performing division. She did, and she's in the Choir part for graduation.

here is a bootcamp checklist:  Bootcamp Checklist....what to bring

Make sure they have a phone card. Also copy both sides of it so you can add minutes on line if needed down the road. Stamps are good as well...no excuses allowed for not contacting you when they can. :-) Good Luck

re: phone card---- make sure they know how to use it....you'd be surprised!

Took him down to the Recruiter's office today.  He'll be at mep's first thing in the am then ship off tomarrow.  He's looking forward to the challenge and scared of the adventure.  Momma took it a little hard but wouldn't show it.  I'm sure she'll close her door at work and have a good cry sometime today.  8 weeks countdown begins.

Thanks all on your input and your honesty.  Glad to be apart of the extended Navy family now!!

It's really 9 weeks...first week doesn't really count.
Get copies of the phone card just in case you need to add time to it...I bought a 500 min and had to add some time. We got more calls than most; but he also got disconnected by the bad payphones and had to call back. They take a bunch of time time off the card each time a call is initiated.

Good morning.  My son, Thomas, went to MEPS on the 18th as well in Fort Lee, VA and we received a call that evening saying he was there. It was very scripted and lasted about 45 seconds. So maybe our sons are in the same company.  It was also his 21st birthday, what a birthday present.
