Navy Dads

Hi Folks:

My son signed up this past January while a senior in high school. I've been reading this site since then and now...it's my turn to post! My son heads to boot camp on Aug. 24th and I will guess around October 26th for graduation. We will be looking for places to stay near the base. I searched the site but either used used wrong terms or outright missed comments... We will be driving into town from the Albany NY area. I read that the Navy has a lodge on base where families may stay - any idea how to contact that lodge? If we can not get into the lodge what would everyone recommend? We expect to stay 2 nights in the area.  Much thanks.

Bob,

You may have to be military or military retired to stay @the Navy Lodge.  Google Navy Lodge Great Lakes and you should find a contact number.

Our Daughter will graduate 1 Sept.  We are so proud of her!

I read that the lodge on the base is the only lodge in the world where a family may stay without a sailor present. I just found: You may contact MWR (Morale, Welfare & Recreation) at 800-905-9330 or visit www.mwrtravelplus.com for information regarding area hotels and attractions. Funny...I looked for quite some time and now that I posted I'm find links!! Amazing.

Bob,

Great info!  I am retired Army and My Father in Law is Retired Navy so we were able to make reservations anyway.  Thanks for the information though!

we have a discussion in the PIR group and Great Lakes Lodging- click http://www.navydads.com/group/pirtipshintsandhelps/forum/topics/gre...

you must have a PIR sailor and you can stay there......

Bob,

My son's PIR was July 8th. We stayed at the Springhill Suites ... see below

SpringHill Suites Chicago Waukegan/Gurnee
4101 Fountain Square Place
Waukegan, Illinois 60085
USA
(847) 688-9800

This place was very very nice and was minutes from the base. My son is in A school at GL so we plan on returning this fall for a visit. I am definitely staying there again.

Folks:

Thank you all for the information. Much appreciated.

Bob

WHen your recruit sends home their form letter, it will come with a flyer that has lodging details.

Robert, Welcome aboard. My son's PIR was April 1 and we stayed at the Navy Lodge. It's very nice and the beds are comfortable. It is also the closest inn to the base. I am not former military, but as I understand, the Navy Lodge, Great Lakes allows non-military parents of SR's to stay there for graduation and may be the only facility that does allow it. You can make a reservation by calling Navy Lodge. You can get the number online. I could not complete the reservation online because it required info I did not have. I would wait until your son's 3rd or 4th week at BC before making the reservation. You should know by then the exact date of his PIR. You will have to give them your son's name to make your reservation as it will be made in his name. You can pay with your credit card. It's a great time. You will enjoy it.

Robert we are making the trip in 5 weeks to our second P.I.R. and will be making our second stay at the Navy Lodge. $65 a night and no taxes. This is where I made my reservations. https://www.navy-lodge.com/ . If you don't go through the MRW you will have to have someone to make the reservations under that has a military ID and they must be present at Check in. we are staying from August 31 st - Sept. 5th.

Hi Bob...my son Justin will be 1 week ahead of yours so I'll pass along anything I learn from him and hopefully you can gain some info.  John

Folks:

Wow. Thank you everyone. Aaron entered the DEP (delaye d entry program) this past january. He walked intook the avsab, and scored 73. Which was enough for Navy seal. He turned that down as he wants to go inot law enforcement. So he signed up for master at arms. When he gets back in december he will go to college with the Navy paying all expenses. After 4 years he can go for a masters (doubt it) go active duty or get a job and stay in the reserves. Too early to tell now. My family is not military oriented so this was a huge shock to everyone. We are so happy that he has a goal and that he entered the Navy. We reviewed all branches and i also prefered Navy. Btw, my dad was Army at the very end of wwII and was an actor for the troops. Wild to think of my dad in a dress! His original bootcamp date was mid december but they offered him $to go 3 weeks early. Lets see...18 and no money or 18 and lots of money....no brainer. Again, a big thanks for welcoming us to the family!!
