If you go in as a SEAL candidate and don't make it, where do you go next? Aren't you already behind on any other A schools? Does the Navy assign you wherever they wish, or is a different Spec Ops an option?

You take whatever is available in the Navy. As of June it was cook, airman undesignated, and seaman undesignated. Different Spec Ops is an option only after some time is served in the Navy.
WOW! That sounds brutal. So, is it better off to go with a different rate, then apply for SEALS once in? Also, do you give up the bonus if you don't enter as a SEAL trainee but make it later?
Yup they are correct..... do it the first time. Very few get great 2nd options.
The needs of the Navy come first. I'd apply for SWCC or an A school that would get you into SWCC. Dive School, EOD, Rescue Swimmer are also areas to look into. None of these are easy alternatives. Anything outside the areas of Spec War and Spec Ops sucks in my opinion.
If you are a trainee who puts out 110% you will have a shot at a roll back. My son had pneumonia and was rolled back. He also injured his back and was rolled again. He started with class 172 and finished with 174. Still better to do it right the 1st time. Never quit. The best attitude to make it through BUD/S is to say to yourself (and mean it) "They will have to kill me to get me out of BUD/S!" Dedication and attitude that is not at the level has no place in a prospective SEAL's mind.
At the rate they are burning out SEALs in all the theaters of war we have going I am surprised to hear that.

My son is in pre BUD/s, what you write is devastating; I was afraid to ask the question myself. Doesn't something seem strange that our son can get a SEALs contract, prove himself eligible for highest military unit on earth, but then if he doesn't make it he has to go to the bottom of the entire Navy? So you have a bunch of "almost" Navy SEALs as cooks and undesignated seamen doing what...scrubbing ship decks? Can anyone explain the logic in this?
