Navy Dads

Am wondering about the normal transition in between boot and IS School.

Are cell phones allowed right away?  Laptops?

What kind of stuff should I not take to her to have if she's not allowed to have it in barracks?    What are the lodging accomadations there for students?

Will she have normal liberty on weekends provided everything goes well?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks Jim.

Also looking specifically for I.S. School in Damneck Va.

Hi Patio and welcome to the IS group page!  You must be very proud that you daughter Amanda will soon become an Intelligence Specialist.  Is a very small group within the Navy and very unique.  I know that you must be very anxious to learn everything that there is about IS, but the truth is that there is not much information online and our children will not talk much about it. Everything is hush, hush and as Jim was telling you, she will soon tell you "sorry dad, but I can't give you any specifics" or you will sense in her voice that she don't want for you to ask questions about what she does..lol.  However, the main thing is that she will enjoy her job a lot, is not boring and she will feel very special about what she will be doing for the country.  My daughter started her IS duties on July 29th of this year and is currently stationed in VA.  Is your daughter already at Dam Neck?  I posted a video about Dam Neck "A" school in this page and trust me, it took me a while to find it.  The video shows must of the basic "every day" stuff at the school according to my daughter (except that they don't mention the few night watch for like 2-4 hrs and then have to go to class in the morning all sleepy).  Well, if you have mor questions, feel free to ask..we try our best to find the answers.

Welcome aboard!!

Hi Patio--sounds like we are on the same schedule.  Matt was just in 945 and just got to Dam Neck.  He's looking forward to "A" school.

Different by a week. My Daughter is in Div 946.   Any info or insights from your son would be helpful.   I expect they will be grouping up for a class, so they will likely in the same A School class.

Thanks for the A school videos Gil.
In my Navy days I did a couple TDY's to Damneck so am familar with the set-up there.     Every ship has an intel team and usually there is no IS on the ship so a team can be made up of non-IS's.  In basic terms a team collects info- back in those days it was all about the Soviets.  So if a DDG crossed paths with a Soviet ship a report was compiled and sent off.  I got assigned to a team, so I can still remember the names of Soviet subs, carriers and  missiles.   The public news that China recently bought Soviet aircraft carriers and recognizing by the picture it was the Kiev is just "not right".   My craziest day in the Navy was seeing a Soviet cruiser moor pierside in Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Here's my update.

D did PIR Friday.  Had to be back at BC by 8pm. She got on a bus @ 1am to go to Chicago airport and waited. The mom had a Sat morning flight on same airline so they waited together.   She got to Dam Neck and checked in for a casual weekend.  No civies (clothes) for 2 weeks.  But she and roomie made a taxi trip to Walmart for the essentials.  They share a barracks room. Room is 3 bed, 1 bath (owner motivated to sell on short sale-ha ha). Cell phones are good to go, as are laptops but have to be 'checked out' by the powers that be. School is in phases for priveleges as well.  So they are not free for overnight weekends for awhile.  Expects to be a week or two to class up.  I warned her about the Marines & others there.

Patio, congrats with your new sailor!!  Did it felt good to walked around with her in uniform, people looking and maybe making comments like "thank you for serving our country"?  Too bad it only lasted for a few ours.  Now my daughter surprised me a week after a flew home for 5 days.  I almost drop to the floor when I saw her in uniform at the door.

Hey, so your wife and you both were in the "spooks" community!  That's so cool and both of you understand better all the secrecy and can cope more with the "I can say anything dad"..lol.

Walmart and the NEX at Oceana will be their best friends..oh and the bowling alley, but yes careful with those Marines.

She did already get the "thank yous".

Her mom was amongst the spooks (literally too- as it's ex now). :-)

Me not so much.   "In God we trust. All others we track and report!"

I have been talking with her about basic stuff. But mostly encouraging her to power up on international current events and US Foreign Policy- like Thomas Friedman's "Longitudes and Attitudes".  Not the most tasty topics for a 20y.o. though.
