Any advantages or disadvantages to signing the "Submarie Duty Volunteer" form?

My son is a DEP and opted not to volunteer for Submarine duty.  I was wondering what advantages and/or disadvantages does he have by not volunteering for submarine duty. He still can change it when he gets to RTC from what I understand?

Any comments/remarks will be appreciated.......

It depends on the person.  Sub and surface are very different.  Not sure if I'd buy "he can change later".  You can look at www.nukeworker.com  Many current and former nukes there to answer all your questions.  My son volunteered for subs because he wanted to be in a small group.  He never served on a sub, but, he still thinks it was a good decision for him.

Thanks Chris, I'll check out the site.

They can all volunteer to do it. The Navy will pick who they want to fill the slots. Doesn't look too bad if he volunteers and isn't held against him if he's not picked.  Mine really wanted subs, but got carrier -- just the luck of the draw.

My son was asked to sign a waiver that if chosen for ELT school (after completion of Prototype) he could be sent to subs. He signed the waiver but didn't get into ELT school and now serves on a carrier, the RR out of SD.

Thanks for the reply.  My son doesn't ship out for bootcamp until July but is asking around on the various Navy sites to see if his choice of jobs will be affected by his not signing the waiver.
