Navy Dads

I am trying to figure out a decent place to stay near Pearl Harbor, when the time comes that is for the Tiger Cruise.  Seems most of the places are in the Waikiki Beach area.  Any of you experienced "Cruisers" have some suggestions?  I have been checking out Airbnb.com which has some pretty decent places to stay provided by locals, such as spare bedrooms they rent out.

The Navy Lodge on Ford Island is awesome.

Jeff, My husband and I will be coming along on the Tiger Cruise at the same time you will be and are looking for a place to stay. The Navy Lodge didn't tell us they were full but said that we could not make reservations until two weeks before the ship reaches port. If you come of with anything please let us know. Thanks!

I am new to this, too. Is the 20th the date "set in stone" to be in Hawaii? or is there any word of transportation from San Diego to Hawaii? I need to set up air  fare, etc. , but I am not sure if it is too soon, because of very little solid info. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I am a single Navy Dad and will be attending the TCruise on the Stennis.  Is there anyone willing to share a room to split expenses a few days before the ship arrives.  Would like to see a few local sites.  Will be leaving from Phoenix AZ possably changing planes in SanDiago and or LA.  Thanks,  Dave

Hello, in Feb 2012 I will be on a tiger cruise on the ddg 91, so I'm very excited about that!  Kurt

I like most of you, am excited about having the opportunity to join our loved one onboard the Stennis. I will be arriving Saturday evening prior to boarding via Spokane/Seattle. If my son is still not in the area, I plan on doing some site seeing on Sunday and would look forward to meeting some other Tigers. There has been several postings on traveling light and what to take. Don't forget those important motion sickness remedies just in case!

Safe travels to all

Hi all.  If anyone's still looking for rooms, the hotel at the airport still has vacancies.  Below is an excerpt from an email being distributed about CVN-74 Tiger Cruise check-in: ...... (dates have been removed)

" ..... * On-load/Check-in for Tigers is 1300-2200.

* If your Tiger does not posses a current DOD ID, the 2 ways to get on base will be:

1. With you as their sponsor.
Or
2. They can ride the provided bus from the USO at the airport.  If they stay out in town on their own they can even go back to the airport to ride the bus if for some reason you can't go get them.

* "Tiger Trappers" will be at the airport looking for Tigers.  ..... and escort them all the way to the USO.

Thanks Perry for the information. We are going a week early and we were wondering if we went back to the airport on the day we can check in if we could ride the bus to the ship.

Yea, unless you're under escort by a crew member, getting there via private vehicle will take a lot of time and delays.  There will be Navy personnel looking for us "Tigers" at the Terminal.  I get there late in the evening the night before and I'm staying at the hotel airport.  They have a free hotel van that will take people right up to the USO.  The USO workers will have a listing of all the Tigers authorized on base.  They'll clear you from that list and take you in a van right to the ship.  The file that's attached to this email is a map of the USO location in the Terminal.  Don't forget a government issued picture ID, drivers license is best, but I always bring my passport....old habit.  Get to the ship early, it's always fun to watch the rest of the "Tigers" try to get on with the crowds.  One thing else, if you're planning on buy any souvenirs aboard the ship, go to the ship's store as soon as you can once you get there.  Most of the stuff they'll have will sell out quickly.  Bring cash, no credit cards on board ship, you could pay your Navy son/daughter for anything you want and they'll use their NAVY CARD that's attached to their checking account.

I have to remind everyone....THIS IS NOT A PRINCESS CRUISE....you will be living on a working warship.  The amenities are very few, living spaces are very tight and the pace on a carrier is hectic. Go into this with an open mind and enjoy the heck out of it.  Your sailors haven't seen US soil for a long time...they are anxious to get mainland!!!  Drink in the experience....it is an awesome time and will provide you memories for life.

Thanks Perry, that information is very helpful!

Paul,

Just a quick question. My wife and I are staying in Waikiki Beach for this week.

She is not scheduled to take the Tiger Cruise but is there any possiblity to get her on the ship for a small tour before we take off?

Let me know the possibility and any logistics that could make this happen.

We are staying at the Hyatt Place.

My cell phone is 678-596-1384 if you wish to call.

Have a safe trip.

Thanks,

Kevin Maxwell father of Matthew Maxwell VFA 97 War Hawk.
