Our son just left for boot camp-ship 9 DIV 200. Is there anyone out there whose son or daughter is in the same?

My son shipped out May 9. We do not know yet what division he is in. How did you know about the ship/div of your son?

Our son left May 1st. We heard nothing until May10th when his wife received a box with the clothes he left in and the few possessions he took with him. Included was only a form letter with the mailing address (the ship and division are included in the address). We have received no other communication...not even for Mother's Day.

I am in the same boat, so to speak, my son left on May 8th, we received his box of smelly clothes on the 11th and nothing else. When is the next time we will anything about him?
I just talked to my son's recruiter and he stated that our kids should be writing un in 2 to 3 weeks and we will find out their ship/div then. If not we can call their respective recruiter and they can tell us.

Thanks-just a word or two will be great. It felt unnecessarily cruel not to get just a word or card or note for Mother's Day. My birthday is coming up in a few days and all I want is word that my son is doing OK.

your sailors are fine....do not expect contact until weeks 3-4 typically.......it's the way it is, regardless of holidays, birthdays, etc..  Part of this process is cutting the apron strings to home and the less contact with home, the less homesickness there is.  It may sound cruel, but your sailor's shipmates are their "family" now and it is improtant that they realize that and that you realize that and learn that lesson....during times of crisis (like the USS Cole bombing, on the mine damage to the USS Samuel B Roberts) it is that bond to their shipmates that can make the difference between life and death...

Thanks for the explanation. My son's been grown and on his own for a very long time. But it's natural to become concerned when "a few days" becomes a few weeks (especially for his wife). If we had known we would hear nothing for 3-4 weeks, we'd have understood and been prepared. It would have been great to have known about this site before, too. :) I will make sure anyone I know whose family member is considering the Navy knows about it.
