To the dads who had sons ship out this week;
My son shipped out last Tuesday from Boston. We received his personal belongings ("sailor in a box") on Friday, and the form letter informing us of his assignment/address/PIR date on Monday, less than a week after he shipped out. His friend Sean shipped out 2 weeks earlier, and again his family received his personal belongings and form letter in under a week.
My advice to you is to listen to and/or seek the advice of the NavyDads! They have been a HUGE help to my family in regards to issues such as travel arrangements and hotels/rental cars/shuttles. And definitely peruse the threads here on NavyDads.com because there is a ton of useful information here for you.
I wish "Fairwinds and Following Seas" to your children!
James and Michael,
Welcome aboard! I myself haven't been here that long, but I've found this site to be very informative, and most of my questions have been answered just by viewing the FAQ's and a lot of the threads here. The NavyDads.com administrators have also been VERY helpful! I encourage you to explore the site, and ask questions.
Steve
Hello Michael,
My best friend left yesterday to MEPS in Charlotte, NC. He just texted me to let me know that he's on his way to the airport and should arrive at RTC Great Lakes about 7pm. I was in the Navy for 8 years, and though alot has changed in 20 years, I may be able to help some. Graduation is on Friday, likely nine weeks from last Friday, so maybe the first Friday in Decemeber, Decemeber 6. Don't be surprised or discouraged if it gets pushed a week to December 13. We will know by next Monday if the companies have formed and training has started. Good luck, and welcome to the Navy family.
My son shipped out last Wednesday (2 Oct) and while we haven't gotten his box or the form letter yet, we're hoping to get it today or tomorrow. I've been keeping a journal of sorts since he left- just writing down what we're thinking about when we think of him each day as he makes his way through P-days. I keep catching myself trying to remember P-days when I went through it almost 21 years ago. Another great source of information for everyone is RTC's facebook page, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/NavyRecruitTrainingCommand. I would suggest "Liking" the page as they post pictures of PIR and other events as well as daily posts on things going on each day.

I know it's a bit early for my son but I wanted to see if any of you dads out there could give me any information on the first phone call that the recruits get to make once they've started training. I'm looking to find out if it's on a Sunday or does it vary and is there a specific area code and prefix number I should watch for? I don't want to miss his call because I don't recognize the number on caller id.
We got our box today. next is to figure out the company or ship he will be in. Anybody have any idea. I understand i need to wait for the letter but i am just hoping to get a jump on the info
Congrats Michael Stults! I wonder if your son is with mine....Shane is his name. He shipped out on the 2nd and we believe that his PIR will be the 27th, based on what we've heard the letter says from other parents we know who had their kids ship out the same day. Depending on if they had to wait for other recruits to show up, if the shutdown affected in-processing, etc, today could be 1-2 day or it could even be 1-1 day. P-days may have gone as long as yesterday but likely ended on Friday or Monday.
I've been writing a "journal" for my son that I'll send when we get his address. We haven't gotten the letter yet but we got his box yesterday. I've tried calling the recruiter but he hasn't returned my calls yet...I've got the Public Affairs Officer's name for RTC...sure don't want to play that card but...lol.
Congrats again on getting your letter!
