My daughter arrived at RTC 9 June and was assigned to this division. Since I didn't see anything for this Ship/Div I thought I'd put something out there and see if anyone elses daughter was in the same division. If we get enough people maybe we can keep tabs on the group as they go through Boot.
A little about me. I have three daughters and all joined the military. My oldest is Air Force, Security Forces and is currently serving at Aviano AB in Italy. My middle daughter is Army Reserves, Military Police, and has a deployment coming up this fall. This is my youngest daughter and she just got to Boot and enlisted as an Intelligence Specialist.
So basically this isn't my first rodeo with BMT/Basic/Boot, but it is with the Navy. Interesting to see how different branches handle information coming out of basic training. The Air Force was pretty tight and we really had no information, pictures or anything unless something bad happened, which it did. She broke her foot during training and was in Med Hold for 8 weeks before she could continue her training. The Army on the other hand had a Facebook page for the company and posted pictures every week. Looks like the Navy might be a little tight with information also.
Well anyway, I hope someone shows up. If not...oh well. I wish all the SRs the best as they embark on their adventure.

Hey Jay, my son is also in Ship 11 Div 236 with a PIR date of Aug. 1. We just got our "letter" today (Monday) with this info. Our son is a college grad from Western Kentucky University with a BS degree in Business Management (3.0 gpa). Wanted to go ahead and enlist, and hopefully try for OCS later. He really doesn't know for sure at this time. Hopes to make it a career regardless of whether he goes OCS or not. After RTC he goes to Pensacola for A school (IT). Good luck to your daughter!!
Hi Jay, My son is also in Ship 11 Div 236. We got the "I'm here" letter yesterday. It would be great to compare notes as they go through.
I'm a retired Chief and I can't wait to hear my son's bootcamp stories. I'm sure it's changed a lot and yet remained the same since 1982 when I enlisted.
Anyways, looking forward to connecting with other Dads. Good luck to your daughter!
Hey Jim and Steve, Yesterday we got our "Kid in a Box" and the form letter from Meghan. So now we are operating on the "No news is Good News" mantra we adopted when our other two daughters went through Basic in their respective services.
Its good to see other Dads are on this page, I was beginning to wonder. lol Perhaps as we get letters from our SR's we could share relevant information. I know individually they won't have a lot of time to write, but maybe collectively we could gleen bits and pieces from each to develop a full picture.
Good luck to both of your SRs as they start their new adventure!
Jim, Maybe you might know the answer to this question since you are retired Navy. When we receieved our "Kid in the box" this week there was a sock in it that wasn't Meghan's. Additionally the shirt she was wearing when she left was missing. The shirt wasn't valuable, just a t-shirt, but the sock is puzzling (men's tube sock size 9-12, way to big for her feet). My wife also noticed on a discussion on Navy for Moms that others receievd their boxes that contained odd items also, but no explaination. Any idea what the extra items or missing items may be about? Just curious, seems to be more than just coincidence.
Jay,
I've seen several posts about this kind of thing and honestly, I have no clue. When I went to boot camp way back in 1982, my personal stuff was packed up by someone else and kept in storage at RTC until I finished boot camp and then given back to me.
I'm guessing that perhaps the recruits now pack their own boxes, and in the stressed and rushed close-quarters situation may grab some of someone else's stuff? Just a guess.
Jay, our son's box did not contain his shoes nor his favorite shirt that he wore to RTC. Had read that there is an opportunity to donate shoes, etc. if so desired. I am guessing that this is what our son did. Surprised to see that t shirt (Salt River Park, St. Croix, USVI) did not come home.
Thanks for the reply guys. Jim, you're probably right, just close quarters and rush to get things done etc. Steve, I have heard they could donate items, just seems odd that they'd donate one item and not the rest of the clothes, especially if it was a favorite shirt. I'll have to ask her in my next letter, she prabably didn't even realize it. Just that extra sock is puzzling me and her mother, we're used to having socks go missing in the laundry but never having an extra one show up at odd times. At first I thought maybe she inadvertantly packed a sock that was issued to her...could be problematic later if it was lol. Her mother has seen posts over at Navy for Moms where there was a loose nickle in the box, and others with odd clothing packed in it. Chalk it up to the mysteries of the Navy lol.
So, let's plan on returning each other's kids' items after PIR, lol.
Sent my son a letter yesterday - he's a huge soccer fan so I updated him on the world cup. Of course at this point, he probably doesn't have time to care, LOL.
I found this a while ago - thought you guys might enjoy it - How to simulate shipboard life at home
Hey guys, just to give y'all a heads up. We just got a call from Meghan, well her mother did. It sounded like they were working on her security clearance packet. She was able to talk about general stuff, basically started with a list of items needed, then short general conversation. So you may want to be prepared for a call soon especially if your SR needs a higher security clearance. Some items they needed were additional referrences, copy of passport and units that her sisters were currently assigned.
Meghan indicated that they haven't started PT seriously yet, and that things are going well. She did pass out when they drew blood and apparently woke up singing some song which was a source of entertainment for everyone around. A bunch of shots including the "peanut butter" shot. Apparently the only thing the Division was having difficulties with was getting the head clean enough for the RDC's liking. Funny, that was one of my souces of consternation with her also. But other than that she said they were doing well and for the most part the division is working together.
The kid in the box mystery is still a mystery as her mother forgot to ask, but the call was unexpected so yeah.
So make sure your ringers are up on your phones. Good luck guys.
That's freaking hilarious Jim. My step-father was a retired USMC DI, so I had several years of actually doing some of that crazy stuff. I remember sometimes for punishment he would make me dig a pit for no apparent reason, or stand at attention for periods of time, and we in fact did perform PM on the lawn mower every week, which included taking it apart and completely cleaning it after every use.
That's funny. I bet you have some interesting stories to tell. I have a young family member who stayed with me for awhile and I imposed "boot camp" on him - PT, "locker" inspections, reveille, taps, the whole deal. To this day he says it was one of the most formative and maturing parts of his growing up. Admittedly, the military isn't for everyone, but I don't think the 8 weeks of boot camp will hurt any of them. I spent 20 years in the navy and I still look back on recruit training as a high point.
here are more funnies...thank I have that list somewhere in the Fantail Group: http://www.navydads.com/group/thefantail
