He has been gone only a day and I already miss him a ton! Get to watch him swear in in the morning and visit with him for a little before he boards the bus. He has been staying with my Fiancé and I for the last 2 months cause him and his Mom weren't getting along. I really loved having him here. Got to spend a lot of quality time with him. It's gonna be tough to see him go tomorrow. But I know it's what he wants. He wants to follow in my Dad's footsteps(who passed away 6 years ago). I am so proud of him. We had a going away party for him Saturday and there were a lot of tears shed at the end of the night. he and his twin brother had a great moment crying in each others arms for 10 minutes. They have never been apart in their 22 years. I have so many different emotions going on right now. I feel sad...but excited. Cant wait till December to see him graduate! Sorry about the long rant......just have to vent a little. Gonna be tough going to sleep the next few nights.

Pat, Thank you for the link. I'm sold on Sarge. I will be contacting him as soon as we get the info. We need. Thanks again. Troy
Troy my son also left on 10-8-2014
Hopefully the letter comes in soon. We are exicted to see him.
Finally!! Letter came today!!! PIR is December 5th. He is Division 031, Ship 11!
Hey Chris, my letter came today too and our sons are in the same Division/Ship!
Congratulations to you both, Chris and Mel!! I remember the feeling.....Keep in touch with each other and try to meet at Sarge's on December 4, 2014. I was impressed at the wonderful evening I had meeting Bill Higdon and his family last Thursday night, October 9, 2014!! Made for a very special evening. Best wishes to each of your SR and your families. ~ Pat
Thanks Pat! Is that you or your son in the profile pic?
I so very much want to be there for his PIR! I know that his other relatives won't be able to attend because of the same reasons my parents couldn't attend my PIR...$$$$. I have the $$ to attend but am concerned about flying with the Ebola threat and/or the winter weather hazards. Thoughts/advice?
Hi Mel - talk to Sarge. Sorry, I did not note where you are traveling from. That is our son - I will try to figure out how to attach photographs - sorry, I am a Dad. I am so very pleased that we did attend Michael's PIR - no, we could not afford it. Thankfully, there was room on credit card. I will very humbly write.....it is worth it....you and your family will return with a renewed and re-invigorated sense of pride in your (our) son and those around him. That is something my wife commented upon. We are from NH. We interacted with WA, AL, FL, TX, GA, and who knows where else without losing a heartbeat. Our sons and daughters are really remarkable people. Our 'kids' are still 'kids', but......they are so much closer to being adult kids and doing their jobs representing and serving our country. You will not regret being comfortable and being able to attend your son's PIR. Be well.
I will add that we flew into Milwaukee, WI - it felt calmer.....it seemed to go well... Please reach out to Sarge - he will take the time to talk to you on the telephone - he will remember the jamoke from NH =- feel free to mention me - Sarge is really a good egg. It is not about the $$ for him - it is about our sons and daughters - he impressed me - along with his staff.
I put a link to a reflection i wrote upon our PIR experience below -

Best wishes to your family, Mel. Congratulations!! - Pat
Michael and I are on the left - Sam and Bill Higdon are on the left
Michael is in the middle - lol - Karen Catherine on the left and ugly old Dad on the far right.....very proud trio!!
You have every right to be proud that you raised a son that made it through a gauntlet that most Americans will never experience and, more importantly, will never have to. Good on ya!
That's Awesome Mel!
