George,

The length of time off will depend on the location of the "A" school your shipmate will attend.

My daughter had "A" school there on the Great Lakes "old" campus.

It's been a while, but here's what I remember:

After Friday's late morning graduation, she had liberty until Sunday night. She then packed up on Monday and we moved her gear to the other side of base before she had to check-in that night --- I drove to the gate, but she had to lug the stuff to her dorm room.

So I was able to see her on Friday afternoon, all-day Saturday and Sunday and then Monday during the day.

my son did have weekend liberty too since his next phase was across the street but he chose to sleep on base due to strict early am muster so everyday we would pick him up in the am and take him back to the base before curfew i guess it all depends on their next phase and RDC rules well atleast your son doesnt have to fly out that friday no time for family :(

It was our experience with Son doing school at Great lakes after Boot; June 2013; He had Dive Prep  class for 7 weeks.

Saw him for 45 minutes or so after graduation.

He then moved to new quarters and settled in and was available about 3;30Pm on Friday. We picked him up at the base entrance.

He was able to come see us at our hotel until 8pm we took him back to his quarters. As long as he is in the car we could drive him back to his quarters on base.

Picked him up at 0600 on Saturday at front of gate and he stayed with us all day. went shopping and dinner. back on base at 8PM and the same on Sunday.  Only way to stay off base all weekend would be to take leave of which he would have none yet.

oh yah dont forget, they have a max mile radius they cant pass in the city he should know it enjoy your new sailor! hooyah!!!

He will need to be back on base every night and MAY have to stand watch at some point during the weekend. The is a 50 mile limit to how far he can travel from base. He will have all the rules.  After PIR he will have to check in and that may take about 4 hours.
