you'll get a very short (~20 seconds) scripted call when he gets into RTC late...then it'll be awhile till you hear from him.....all very normal

Thank you to everyone for their kind words and advice. Without your advice we would never have known to ask about seeing him today. We were able to attend the swearing in ceremony and spend some more precious time with him. He was so appreciative that we were there. He's in the air now and due to land in Chicago in just under an hour. The journey has begun...
We were a lucky today in that we had an unscripted and unplanned call. My daughter needed some info for her security clearance. She didn't have my work number, so she left a voicemail on my cell that doesn't get service in my building, but she did get to talk to her Mom for a few minutes. That helped Mom out some, I think. Other than that, we're waiting until we can get more time to talk to her. We received her form letter with her address on it Tuesday, so we've already sent some letters and pictures to her.
Our son left on Tuesday. We went to the hotel Monday night, had dinner with him and a close family member. Saw him swear in on Tuesday, hung out with him for most of the day and watched him take his orders and get on the shuttle. He did call us from O'Hare when he landed and spoke for a few minutes, then of course we got the scripted call at about 12:30. Today's his 18th birthday, we're really proud of him.
Congrats to you Sandeep and Chuck. You guys should see your boxes either today or very soon.
Congrats to all of those who have family shipping out for Great Lakes this week. My son flew out of Knoxville, TN Sep9. All of you should be very proud of your Sailors. I know I am. They are doing something so few will ever understand. As a retired Navy Master Chief, I can assure you all their needs will be met while they are there. I can also assure you that nothing anyone can say will replace the empty spot at your dinner table nor ease the feelings you are having right now. Just wait until you see your proud Sailor come out the other side. It's all worth it. Hope to see you all at PIR.
congradulations on your daughter going into the navy, I have a son who is graduating on september 25th 2015 ., we cant wait, we have a son in the army and i come from a long line of military Its hard to see them go. my wife handles it pretty well, we are proud of all that enter the military, its a life changing experience, i myself was in the army for 9 years, and i went in when i was 17 . both my boys went into the service at 18,right out of high school i dont know if this is your first sibling to go into the service, but if it is ,were proud of all of you and welcome to the military family,we are from illinois and live about 30 miles from greatlakes, i know all the area, because i am retired from construction and i worked on the base building all those buildings , so if you have any quedtions about navy bootcamp, calls graduation , etc. we just went through all af it, my wife is on navy moms , and talks to 3 moms who sons are in the same division , and thats pretty cool, so please dont hesitate ,and welcome aboard
