Thanks! I was informed that you had to get the "right card", due to the .45 or .50 a minutes charges and some allegedly charge a separate fee for each call made. I had no idea, other than I was told to make sure it's an international calling card. I really appreciate your input and wish you a happy holiday season!

As for gifts you can't send much more than a card or letters. Our son celebrated his birthday while at boot camp also. We sent him the singing cards. He said the instructors are not fond of them getting them but O well! he had to deal with them not me. LOL. They get pretty bored sometimes so he and his bunk mates would open the cards and dance to the music. He actually was happy he had so many singing cards. They called it disco night.

Thank you so much for your quick response! I was going to send some gloves that he requested and possibly some guitar/car magazines and cards. I didn't know what I couldn't send and was really concerned about the "right" international calling card. I already have the box and label from the post office, but just need to know what to put in it? I haven't heard from him in about 12 days, so hopefully he will be able to send me an e-mail and tell me some other things he can use. I WILL forward the birthday wishes to Nick and Iwe wish everyone your way

PS I won't send him a large stuffed teddy bear or a sleeping bag!

John another thing! Do not send anything bulky they will open it in front of everyone and read it... so just send several letters or cards.. we learned that the hard way!!! Good luck tell him happy birthday from all of us here..

John while my son was overseas we had to send him a specific AT&T world wide calling card. It could only be this one. So I know that overseas you need that specific one. In Great Lakes, Illinois I would think any US standard calling card would work just fine. I'll call my son and ask him for an accurate answer to this. I'll post it here once I get in touch with him. Once the ship hits the main land again the Sailors run wild. lol

Sorry John I'm a little slow. Your son is not in boot camp. He is with the fleet already. Than yes AT&T international or world wide calling card. It is one of them. A good present to send to the ship is a comfortable set of sheets, blanket, and pillow. The ones they get my son said itch and are not that good. We sent him these things and he loved them and sleep much better. Candy, Dvd's, peanuts, beef jerkey, cash, anything that will not melt and will be ok traveling.

AT&T global prepaid calling card. You can put on 25 to a max of 2oo dollars. Your son can bye this on the ship in the supply office for 20 dollars. Then you can call AT&T and pay for additional minutes.

I guess I could have been more specific about my son being in the Gulf, but thanks again for all of the replies and information! I will be purchasing the AT&T cards this afternoon and the jerky, dvd's, etc... ideas are great. His package will be shipped today! Thanks again foreverything!

Navydads Creator, Got a question. My recruit wrote and asked for an AT&T phone card, I live in Long Island NY, I couldn't find an AT&T card anywhere, I got him a Sprint card instead. Is it hard to get the AT&T cards or is Long Island just weird. I would be greatful for sugestions as to where to find AT&T cards.

Stan it depends on where he is. If he's in boot camp or in the states then any calling card will do. Once they are with the fleet and head overseas they need the Global At&t card, which they can buy out of the ship store. That way while there overseas us parents can call At&t to add minutes to their card because for some reason their always broke.LOL My son is currently at sea doing exercises and it's easier to communicate with him by email. The ship phones are horrible. Their is a delay so you end up talking over each other to much.

My son is in Afghanistan and has had a problem getting any ATT card purchased over there. Very limited internet access and he is forced to call collect. How can I buy one and send it to him? Is it purchased online or do you to go to a electronis retailer such as Best Buy? After I get one I will be happy to keep addingh minutes as needed

Never needed one and I'm l;ooking for suggestions

John...............Wife just went Walgreens/CVS drug stores and picked up what they had on the rack. Most of cards have some hidden charges, either on their end or the local phone company. Considering the amount of time they get to call depends on everything from their behavior to how the RDC feels at the end of the day, most of the calls we got were short ones...................his minutes went to his GF.
As for B-day/Xmas..........you might want to wait to see where he is going to be stationed, if nothing else a good laptop always works.
