Navy Dads

Much respect for the folks running this site!  We shipped our Son off Sept 20 and I found great comfort from navydads.com!  We received his form letter yesterday along  with the curve ball of a Thanksgiving Grad (Nov 23).  I thought I would reach out and tap into others experience. I am wondering if the process will be 'normal', with the recruits flying out the next day or will there be a bit of variance here due to Thanksgiving?  If his Liberty will include T-Day, then we would want to plan for that and set up a Thanksgiving in deployoment :)    Any info/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Great question.....I'm not sure just how it would work. My best advice is to go right to the source by calling the RTC Public Affairs Office!

Phone:   Public Affairs Office 847-688-2405

Past practice - they generally flew out Friday

Much appreciated!  We will just have to plan for it and hope for the best. Now I will have to find a close approximation to a 'home cooked' thanksgiving. The 'curve' may very well end up being a blessing.

My son shipped out on 9/21 and his graduation is 11/23 as well.  I actually was extremely lucky that I got a phone call from him today ( he needed some information from home for security clearance)  He told me his graduation date and said that they are being told preliminarily that they might not get any liberty after graduation, he said they will probably be sent to the airport right away due to them wanting to get the guys shipped off to A school before the 4 day weekend.  He did say that we could spend time with him at the airport though...and that once he gets to Pensacola, where his A school is at, that they will probably have liberty for the weekend.  I am not sure how accurate that is but he said that is what they are telling them at this point in time.

Thanks for the info Ronald.  That would be heart breaking and unfortunate and it seems to me not in the best interest of the recruits.  My son will also be going to Pensacola btw.   Perhaps we can send them a large turkey or something... :)

I was originally thinking of renting a passenger van to haul the family up and also make room to take a few of his fellow recruits with us on Thur for the ones that did not have family.

There is a really nice place to eat literally around the corner from RTC. Sailors from Great Lakes eat there all the time. Here is a link to the Yelp review with the address and a map.

I talked to my sons recruiter last night who had just returned from a trip to the training facility.  His educated 'opinion' was that they would likely not ship out until Friday and be given liberty on T-day.  I suppose we will have to just plan for everything. Things certainly have not changed from my day. I grew up in a Navy family and served in the Army myself.  I imagine I will be getting re-aqainted with the term FUBAR again. At any rate, our recruiter said he will continue to dig into it and I will pass on anything I hear.  At the moment we have 4 nights booked just to play it safe.

Thanks Jim. We will definitely check into this.

Dave.....like I suggested....go to the source at Public relations. Then you can let us all know!

Dave...I just tried to call to get the answer for you....unfortunately the Public Affairs Office is closed on Sat-Sun! I'll try Monday morning for you so that you can plan accordingly!

Tom,  I called on Friday and did not reach anybody. I was able to leave a message.  Hopefully better luck next week.

I'll keep digging for you...I would bet that they leave on Friday, but I'm not sure and don't want to give you wrong info....
