My son's program has him staying at Great Lakes for 3 weeks after PIR. From what I understand, he will need 4-5 hours to move/report in to the other side of the base. Will he be able to take his Cell phone so he can contact us when he is done? Will he have Liberty on Saturday and Sunday. My wife and I are currently planning on staying until Monday so we can maximize the time with him over the weekend.

He should have liberty but will need to return to base each night. In addition, he MAY have duty during the weekend but usually will not. Cannot have phone on RTC grounds -
He can take his cell phone over the the TSC side when he goes to check in, and should have Sat and Sun liberty. He needs to not even turn his phone on until he is completely done checking in though.
Thanks Margaret! He did say in his letter that he leaves RTC after PIR and goes over to the other side(Training Support System) Yes I will remind him about not turning it on until he is finished checking in.

I understand that...important you know not to give him the phone until he physically leaves RTC
Apologies, I forgot they have to go pick up their stuff and take the bus over. Yeah, the pockets in the crackerjacks are not phone friendly. You are correct, he has to wait.

Thanks Margaret and Paul for all the advice - my son did say there was a Sailor who made the mistake of bringing her phone back to RTC after PIR - all his Division knows not to do that.
