Dear Marty;

Both my daughter and nephew have both graduated from OCS. My daughter's graduation was two years ago and my nephew was 18 months ago. In answer to your questions;

1. Getting a class date takes time. He needs to have patience. New port OCS is not very big and the openings fill up fast. Than there are some cadets that get bumped and redo classes, and that slows down the process. It took my daughter from the time all the papers were signed and interviews done 8 months before she could leave for OCS. It took my nephew 10 months. There is no rule or anything set in granite.

Its different for everyone. Just tell him to be happy he has been selected and his time will come. Your going to have a number of questions when that happens so, feel free to contact me and I'll walk you through the process.

2. The information may change over time but when my daughter went through 4 out of 5 were graduating. There are a number of reasons for that. 

(a) Some cadets find out quickly this is not for them and drop out.

(b) They fail, either the physical part of the training , or mental part. 

I'm a former Marine combat vet and when I went through Parris Island 1 out of 3 were not able to finish. OCS is a lot easier. He'll be fine!

Tell you son to stay in shape. He needs to be in a good exercise program 5 days a week. If he gets there out of shape, he will be in deep trouble fast! They expect you to arrive in shape.

Marty,

You should be a proud parent. Watching your kids grow into officers is a great moment. The Navy seems to be random when assigning classes but most of it depends on people in Millington, Tenn. They control class dates. I have had 3 go thru OCS/ODS in Newport. Your son needs to start (or continue) a good daily exercise and running program. What Tony says is true about drop outs. There are a number of helpful guides for him in this website. Good luck to him

Congratulations!  Our son was class of 14-17.  His designation is NFO.  He never had a chance to get a letter. Everything happened within a couple of weeks.  The recruiter called him and said that his application was accepted and within a day or so he was told that he would be at OCS by the following month.  A few days after that, the recruiter contacted him and told him he had to report to OCS by the following Sunday.  What a crazy few weeks.

The class did have quite a few people roll back, but they also had quite a few roll in from previous classes. Be sure to check the information on this site about OCS.  It was a wealth of information on how everything is set up week by week.

Our son was selected for SWO in April and it still waiting. No one seems to have any way of telling what the dates are. A little frustrating ... but I am sure it will be worth it.

Here's my son's (LTJG, US Navy OCS Class 11-14) reply:

I think it took me six months to get a class date. It varies widely. 

Graduation rate is over 80% when i came through. And that's just counting folks who you start with. Most who roll will graduate in another class. 

P.S. Know gouge inside out before arrival.

Hi all,

I am new on this site as my son graduates from college in a few weeks and was told verbally he may go to OCS in January.  Does anyone know how soon before his OCS report date he should expect to receive the official orders with the exact report date?  thanks to all of you for this information!
