My son just left for boot camp on October 28 and I know that this is jumping the gun considering all the possible scenarios that will decide my son's PIR... but if his boot camp takes the "normal" length of time, will graduation still occur on a holiday?

Mine too, I am hoping the week of Christmas and he will be able to come home for a few days before A School
My son also left the same time, good luck to you and your family! Our recruiter could not give us a PIR date he said we should have a Div and Ship number and address this coming week sometime.
According to my Son (left on the same day) and his Recuriter they said the PIR would be Dec 29 but who knows.
I see now looking at the upcoming graduations that they are not always on a Friday... not sure how I got that impression but I'm new to this.
My Daughter arrived at Great Lakes the evening of 27OCT09. My wife was chatting with the Public Affairs Office and Career Councelor at Great Lakes, The next schedule Grad date we can expect to be published would 30 Dec 09 and we can see this added on this link soon. "http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/upcoming_grads.asp" They are moving the grad forward to the Wednesday prior to the Holiday. Its still a hit or miss on confirming My daughter's grad date till we confirm her Ship and Division. And of course things change at a moments notice :)
Wednesday... wow, it'll be interesting to see how difficult it'll be to set up reservations with all the changes that can occur. Just got my son's "box" today but still no mailing address... So- with my son arriving at Great Lakes on the 29th, I guess it's possible that his graduation date may be that same Wednesday?
Real good chance of the same day. My understanding is normal schedule for graduations is Friday's, Except when Federal Holidaysput a kink in the schedule. Public Affairs Confirmed the move to the 30th, Then off to "A" School they go. I would give it a few weeks before making plan's. Checking prior posts for the PIR have been very informative.

Thanks, Thom. Good luck to you and your family as well! Hope your son does great!

Thanks, Paul. Good luck to your daughter! Yeah, I've had a great time reading the posts about PIR. Really looking forward to going. Thank you for the info. Please let me know if you hear anything else.

Mark,

We received my daughter's letter confirming her PIR is 30DEC for her group today (06NOV) in the mail. She was able to add comments on the end of the letter which she is in great spirits and enjoying the food "She better enjoy the food, she will be learning to cook it as a CS". If you havn't received the letter yet, I'm sure it will be coming soon.

Paul
Paul,
Thank you. We still have not received anything except David's box. We look for news every day and though we know that it'll be soon- it's not soon enough. I guess we just want to know that he's doing ok. That he likes it there and that he's made friends. We know that this is already the case but still want that reassurance. It's funny, he's a full grown young man now and we still think of him as a youngster. I'll let you know when we hear something.

They have the hard job now. Large group of people to become a team in a short period of time. An entirely different world to learn and challenges ahead of them. Once they make through Boot camp it gets easier- "A" School will be just as strict "Continuation of Boot Camp as I call it" in a sense. Smaller class sizes.Additional freedom's earned along the way. They will have their duty nights, Able to go on liberty at different times during training. Possible Civilian Cloth's chits after a certain point in training as well. Then look out "Fleet". . I am so excited for them all.
I wouldn't plan on them taking any leave to go home until they are between "A" School and first duty station.
My wife has always said being a Navy Wife is the toughest job in the Navy. She has changed that to a heart felt 'Being a Navy Mom is the toughest Job in the Navy". I can see that!
Hopefully you'll receive news tomorrow.
