My son is AS. Any specific info you need?
Is the description given at about.com accurate, he was told by the counselor he would be working on jet and helicopter engines. Does not appear to be accurate if what I am reading is correct. What is there rotation between sea duty and air station duty?, just not sure what he will be doing. I hate to say I am a control freak, but in some regards I can be. Also what will he be able to do with knowledge gained post navy?

Dan, the description is very accurate. AS ratings do not work on aircraft engines. Has your son started RTC? His assignment after "A" school would most likely be to go to "C" school. Scoring well in class at the A school is very important in terms of your sailor getting his "wish list" assignment. My son wanted sea duty and he scored toward the top of his class so he got his assignment he wanted aboard a CVN. If your son wants air station, then study hard and you get what you want (usually). Sea duty is just that...you are assigned 36 months on a ship, of course you rotate between in port and out to sea; not air station to sea duty. If you choose IA, then that can all change.

If your sailor doesn't want AS, then he best be talking to his recruiter (or sponsor) ASAP. My son did not originally want AS, but found out advancement was pretty quick and went that way. As far as after the Navy, depends on what area of AS he specializes in: electrical, HVAC, hydraulics, etc. Lots of job opportunities for that rating. Hope this helps.
