Navy Dads

Driving from Southeast Pa. to see Divion 161 graduation on 4/16/10. Taking my sailor/son Patrick (Hopefully) to a Cubs game on Saturday. Checking out the captured U-505 Friday afternoon. Hope we have fun!

try to call the museum for reservations for the sub tours....they are limited in size and tend to fill up pretty fast......it is an awesome experience and they have done a remarkable job with the entire exhibit.............

Have a safe trip....it'll be an awesome experience...and post your suggestions and advice to make PIOR easier for future Navydads!!!
Wednesday-We drove half way from S.E. Pa.(West Chester) and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Richfield, Ohio off of the Ohio Turnpike. Ate at a local sports bar called "Memories". Good food for the money and lots of it. get a mini suite if you can afford it, lots of room. Free breakfast at the hotel too!
Drove the second half on Thursdayand stayed at the Waukegan (Chicago) Merriot on Northpoint Blvd. Real close to the base (10 mins.) They give discounts for Sailor's families staying there, offer printed information, and help arrange a shuttle. (Shuttle and public transportation to Chicago highly recommended) Lots of local places to eat within walking distance of the hotel.
Friday at 6 A.M., we took the shuttle (to and from) the Graduation ceremony. Get there early for good seats. Bring your I.D. Get dropped off at the gate if it is backed up with traffic, and walk in. The wait was kind of long for the ceremony to begin, but well worth it. Bring binoculars and a good zoom digital camera. Only take pics inside or they might take your camera. Plan on spending lunch with your Sailor, they have alot to talk about. Take it easy this day and let them relax in the hotel room if needed.
Day 2(Saturday) We parked in station lot ($2) and we took train (right next to training center) to Chicago. Took about an hour. Buy a pass for $7 each, good for all weekend. We saw the U-505 (Museum of science and industry) then took in a Cubs game at Wrigley. Didn't have enough time to see the whole museum., and we took a cab ($30) to Wrigley from the museum. (South Chicago to North Chicago) The city is really long! Make sure you see Lake Shore Drive, it is beautiful and right next to the Lake. Sailors ride free on CTA system! Get a good map of the city transporatation routes.
We left Sunday. Again went half way to Richfield, Ohio. Went home the following day. We miss Patrick already!
