Navy Dads

My son Justin is aboard the USS Charlotte based in Pearl Harbor.  After arriving in Feb. 2009 he didn't board until June.  After a couple of months at sea they returned to port. They just left this week. He of course was not able to say where he is going or when they will be back. So his time aboard has been limited. Being new to this, I feel for those sailors and their families who have spent more time(and the usual 6 or more months) at sea and as for myself I am not looking forward to not hearing from him for weeks on end.

Hi, Ron. My son is also homeported in Pearl Harbor. After over three years, I'm still getting used to it! Periodically my son is able to send/receive emails which does help a bit. Some times I'll hear from him a few times a week. Other times, weeks and weeks will go by without a word. Do you have his on board email?
I did, however I seemed to have misplaced it.

I would encourage you to get his on board email address. We use it when our son is at sea. You can only send plain text messages, and they read everything that is sent and recieved. Also, if your son is still going through qualls, he may not have much time to check and send email. So, don't be dissappointed if you don't hear from him very often. For a sailor who doesn't have his dolphins yet, spare time is nil.

My son, along with his two best friends on the boat, has decided to re-enlist, so we will be experiencing several more years of the seperation blues. (There's a song in there somewhere!) But take heart, the sense of pride and accomplishment your son will achieve is an amazing thing to watch.
Hi, Ron. My son is also stationed in Pearl Harbor. Aboard the USS Olympia. He always lets us know when he's going to sea, and while at sea my wife and I receive emails periodically from him. The more frequent the emails the more home bonding he requires. Just keep in contact with him as often he and you can to keep morals up. I know my sons first time to sea he was out maybe four or five days and I got a phone call from him, " Hey dad we're in San Diego" about four hundred miles from our home. My son has faired well, spends alot of off time at the beach on a paradise island. But he's always looking forward to coming home.
Hi

Greetings Kenorian, et al !

My son is nearing the end of his first deployment on the U.S.S. West Virginia. If you get on the "THE STUPID SHALL BE PUNISHED" Blog site, managed by a Bubblehead Officer, you can see a photo of my son's Boat with Cadet's on the deck. John told me in an email that they had their first day of R/R since getting underway in early April, and they call it, " A steel beach day." Well, each of you are an encouragement to me, and i hope this message may help someone, also. Oh, by the way, I have sent Three mail drops over the past two months, and his ship mates are using the playing cards i sent to them. He is eating the candy and chewing the gum. As a NUB, he is not allowed to play cards, which is a good thing ....

Yes, as a NUB he wouldn't be allowed to "play" anything. His time on the sub will get a lot better once he gets qualified.

hmmmm............ I wonder if the term NUB will go away once there are women on board............??

any other USS Charlotte  families on here

My son is stationed in Pearl Harbor too on another sub.  He is not allowed to tell me when he is leaving or when he will be coming back, or where they are going.  It could jeopardize the submarine if someone got wind of this.  Once he told me that he didn't know where he was going until the sub had already left port, and they were each given something that told them where they were headed.  I definitely go for this secret stuff.  You know the world is changing and many crazy people anti american, are going into various areas of life, only to do harm.  I see you wrote your post on Jan. 29th,2010, almost 2 years ago, so I hope he is liking the Navy and still keeps quiet on their whereabouts.  He calls when they get back to port or will email me a brief note.  Go Navy!!!
