Best of luck to you Tom and your wife. The whole experience is a challange at times but is worth every moment when you stand and see your little girl come in the drill hall as a confident sailor of the United States. The emotions are the best you will ever feel, be proud! My babysailor graduated from BC in Oct 2008 (she just turned 18) and now is in A school in Pensacola. I have never been so PROUD!!!!!!! I'm sure you will be the same. Give my best to your daughter and thank her for serving our GREAT country.

HooYah Tom.....all you have read about and researched takes on new meaning next week as it is no longer an abstract idea. You're goning to continue to have a bunch of questions and new emotions....use the site to answer those concerns. In a few short weeks you'll be sitting in the drill hall as the divisions march in...it's gonna be amazing!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to you know that our daughter Kelly will be leaving Chandler Arizona this coming Tuesday for her boot camp training at Great Lakes. We very proud of her decision to enlist in the Navy and for suggesting that her mother and I join these wonderful web sites. Thank you for all your support and words of advice to my questions that have posted to the Navy Dads Daughters group and here. I am very grateful to the Chandler Recruiting Station at Dobson and Chandler Blvd. for preparing Kelly physically and mentally for this new adventure and career. The recruiters are doing a great job in having their recruits learn the general orders, security codes and many other details prior to their recruits departures for basic training. Kelly feels very confident in what she has learned and is ready for the next phase to begin.

Keep us in your thoughts next Tuesday as we say good bye at 5:00 a.m. at the recruitment station. Thanks again. Tom, Peggy, and Kelly McGlew.

My view point on the list. The people who process them in don't seem privy to it. My daughter had been told by several people not to even bother with the bras, womens underwear and swimsuit, because those would all be issued. One of the recruiters in the office (a woman) told her to make sure she had everything on the list. We got her box back and all the underwear, bras and her new swimsuit were in it. Several other Moms and Dads of girls have said the same thing.

Just as an aside, they give them a sharpie to address the box. Our daughter wrote "I Love you" and a little smiley face on the inside of one of the flaps. I thought that was pretty inventive, since they're being rushed through everything.

Hi Robert and NavyDads Admin,

Thank you both for all the information to my questions and I will review all these with Kelly when she returns home from work this evening. It helps knowing that others like you and the other Navy Dad's and Mom's are just a few keystrokes away. Thank you for your support. ...Tom

Tom- I've copied what EG has posted in the Bootcam group:

The following is a list of items that you must bring to boot camp and are allowed to keep during training:

A. Photo I.D./ Drivers License
B. Social Security Card.
C. Marriage Certificate (if applicable).
D. Divorce Decree (if applicable).
E. Copies of Dependents Birth Certificate (if applicable).
F. Complete civilian and military immunization records.
G. Direct Deposit System form with bank account and routing number information.

These are items that you may bring with you to boot camp:

1. Wrist watch, wedding ring.
2. Religious medallion (No larger than the size of a dog tag).
3. Writing material (NO bottled ink).
4. Pocket dictionary.
5. Pocket bible.
6. Small address book.
7.Hairbrush and comb.
8. Pre-paid phone cards.
9. One pair of prescription glasses, reading glasses or contacts (with one week of cleaning solution).
10. A small amount of cash (i.e. less than $25).

Female recruits may retain the following personal items:

1. Feminine sanitary items.
2.Conservative cosmetics. Female/one each of face powder, blush, lipstick, eye shadow, and mascara (non-aerosol or glass) Make-up will be authorized for division photos and graduation weekend only.
3. Barrettes (Female/must match hair color).
4. Six white sports bras and two white full cup bras.
5. Six plain white cotton briefs (No lace).
6. One conservative, solid color (blue or black) one-piece swimsuit.
7. Birth control medications.

The following items are UNAUTHORIZED to be possessed by recruits in training:

food, candy, chewing gum or alcoholic beverages;
cigarettes or other tobacco products;
sharp objects, scissors, fingernail files or manicure kits;
lighter fluid, non-disposable lighters, matches, aerosol cans, perfumes, colognes, liquid shoe polish or any articles in glass containers;
radios, books, tape recorders, non-prescription or prescription sunglasses, musical instruments, sports equipment or cameras;
firearms, explosives, ammunition, knives or weapons of any kind;
calculators or electronic games;
lewd or obscene photographs or literature;
cards or dice;
non-prescription medicine, drugs or vitamins;
low-cut or two-piece swimsuits;
illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia;
Jewelry (except for a small religious medal, wedding and/or engagement ring and a conventional, conservative watch). While in uniform you're not allowed to wear any other jewelry.

What To Expect When Your Child Arrives:

Upon arrival, new recruits are required to go DIRECTLY to the USO office and check in with the military staff member present. The USO office and lounge is located in Terminal 2, Main Floor, Upper Level Office Spaces (office spaces are located above the airline ticket counters). You can see the USO office from the Chicago Police Booth located just prior to exiting the lobby area. Stairs are located at either door 2B or 2C.

After arriving at the USO, the staff member will give you instructions and an opportunity to eat if it is not too late. Most new arrivals are given meals en route to O'Hare Airport or during layovers. Whenever possible, you must eat PRIOR to arriving at O'Hare Airport.

Recruit training, or "boot camp," will be approximately 8 weeks long.
The goal of this training is to transform your child from a civilian into a Sailor with all of the skills necessary to perform in the fleet. Their training will include physical fitness, seamanship, firearms, firefighting and shipboard damage control, lessons in the Navy's heritage and core values, teamwork, and discipline. Their training will be challenging but highly rewarding

You can see that very little is allowed at RTC so think carefully about purchasing a duffle. Anything in excess will be shipped back to you in the famous box!

As for insurance... many carry USAA (visit USAA.com) as there is a break for military over commercial rates.....
There are large yards at the ports where sailors can store their vehicles....Kat choose to leave her car at her mom's while Eric left his with me....that way they can be run occasionally keeping seals lubricated and tired from flat-spotting. Otherwise your vehciles will be sitting in a large lot for up to 7 months at a time in a salt-air environment...not the best for a finish.

Hi Everyone,

Well time is getting close for my daughter Kelly McGlew to go off to boot camp. She leaves Phoenix on March 24th. Preparations are under way with clothing and essentials being packed. I have a question on where swe can look for a good duffel bag? Also I have a question on car insurance for navy sailors. Is there a government insurance program she use to secure coverage for her car? Also is there a time when she can begin using her car say a base station? Does Navy store vehicles when they are station board ship? We will be keeping her car with us till the time she needs it in the future. Thank you for all your support these past few months and I look forward to your replies to my questions. God bless you all and your sailors.
Kind regards,
Tom McGlew

Hello all. My name is Howard. I'm a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer and my daughter Zoey is now in her second week of boot camp. Looking forward to trading sea stories with the group and attending Zoey's graduation.
