How long is IT A school in terms of weeks?

Our son reports for basic training at Great Lakes on June 9 and then is scheduled to go to Pensacola for IT A school.  His contract says that A school will be 14 weeks but everything I've read online…Continue

Today I am a very proud and humbled father. I received word from son that he is going to graduate next Friday from IT A school with Honors. He will finish #2 in his class....just a 1/2 point behind his buddy. Additionally he will be promoted to E-4 (IT3) when he arrives at Norfolk. He has worked his tail and off and reaped the benefits. I see a great future for him going forward. He also contracted for another year.

Sounds good. Thanks Bill!

Bob T, yes you can definitely spend time at the airport with your sailor. You go to the ticket counter and explain that you are parents/family of a sailor shipping out, give them the relevant flight/gate information and they will issue you a special boarding pass that will enable you to spend time with him at the gate.

Thanks for all the information Bill. I will definitely let you know if and when we decide to head down there!

Bob T, I forgot to add, we stayed at the Ashton Suites and Inn at 910 North Navy Blvd. It's not a 5 star resort but we found it to be just fine and a good value at $89/night for 3 of us. The best thing about it is that it is less than 1 1/2 miles from Corry Station so you are literally 5 minutes away. Also, if and when you go, give me a shout. I can recommend some really good restaurants!

Bob T, there are 3 phases of liberty when they arrive at A school. The first phase they remain on base but can use facilities there such as the MWR, pool, etc. Phase 2 they are allowed to leave the base and wear civilian clothes but cannot spend the night off base. The Phase 3 they are allowed to spend the night off base. My son at this point (10 weeks) is still in Phase 2. Not sure when they qualify for 3. But for him it doesn't matter as he does not have a car down there and he will be finished before Thanksgiving. They do not get "leave" during school. However, they do get liberty on the weekends and certain holidays. So....he may have phase 3 liberty by Thanksgiving and could come home. But you would definitely be able to visit with him and spend much more quality time than after PIR.

Bill - That's good to know. My son will be heading there next week after leaving RTC.  Ii would be nice if he had a 4-day weekend for Thanksgiving. Maybe we can go visit him. Does he have to have "leave" to visit home even if he is off from school? I would think he does. It would probably be best if we flew down to see him if possible.

My wife, daughter and I visited my son in Pensacola over the Labor Day weekend. The IT A school received Monday off so we got 3 full days with him. What a pleasure that was after just hours spent with him 9 weeks prior to that after PIR. If you get to Pensacola be sure to take in the National Naval Aviation Museum. What an incredible facility!!

Hiram, I am a little gun shy on providing exact dates (OPSEC) but based on what my son told us regarding the start and stop dates of his IT School, he will be in Pensacola for just over 19 weeks. Originally he too thought it was 24 weeks. Maybe the curriculum has changed a bit, perhaps it is based on class size, just not sure. His PIR is this Friday so if this changes I will keep you posted.
