Tim Miller,

I just saw that your son is in class 09-11. My daughter, Kristin Greene is also in that class. I'd be interested to hear anything you know about what they are doing and if you'll be at the grad ceremony on 4/22/11. My wife, 6 yr old grandson and I will fly into Boston on the 20th and look forward to the events. My only experience with Newport was running the Ocean State Marathon ther twice in 1982 and 1984. Kris was 2 yrs old on the last one and I was 43. It seems like yesterday. I'll probably be the oldest parent at the graduation but still very proud of my kids. My son ,Adam, based at the amphibious base in Little Creek, VA may be able to attend if not deployed before. He's an E-6 IT1 (recent rating change from QM2) in the Riverine Squadrons. It ought to be a great chance to see his sister get her O-1. I'm sure he'll get some ribbing for that; but he'll be proud of her.

I think rule of thumb at the start is for mail to be letter sized and not obviously containing a lot of stuff.  The mail that is likely to be opened are the ones which could possibly contain contraband.  We tried to stick to a letter, with maybe a couple of newspaper clippings and nothing got opened, or if they did, no issue.  We did have one case where a phone card went missing, but that was PO stuff, not DI stuff.  If we had a lot to send, we split up so as not to send big bulky envelopes which would draw attention.

As Mike says, very limited at the beginning.  You get one call on the day they start, but they are just passing on mailing info etc, and can't really talk much.  Try to use "no news is good news" theory and write them often.  Even though they have very little time to respond, just getting something at mail call is a big boost.  Good luck.

VERY limited communication until they can use cellphones around week 10.  Until then, he will be able to call a few minutes a week, usually on Sunday afternoon.  Unless phone privileges are extended or withdrawn.  Just be patient.

Does anyone have the email address "template" for our LOs at OCS? I saw it somewhere but cannot remember where. It was the OCS / Navy generic email address; all you had to do was drop in your Candidate's name. Thanks.

Yes, good advice all around. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I will take the advise. Thanks Bill

It is frustrating, because they have little time or opportunity to call, write, or later on, email. You will go days and perhaps a couple weeks without hearing anything.
All I can recommend is to write frequently. It will make you feel better and they really appreciate the support.

Ok, got it Bill. Trying to manage his mother's expectations (ok, mine too). It's going to be a looooong time until Thanksgiving. And Mike, yes I can see where S.E. LA is a bit out of the way, but as Bill has pointed out, we are in the same boat regardless of location. Ted has an aunt an hour down the road, and I guess that won't do him any good either. I went NROTC, not nearly this scary.

MG,
No, I haven't seen my son since he left 9 weeks ago and don't expect to see him until graduation. He hasn't gotten any liberty yet, although he might this weekend. I don't think they are allowed off base or to have visitors in the first 8-9 weeks. Starting around week 6 he began to get a little free time on the weekends for making calls, writing email, etc., but nothing you could schedule a visit around.
