Some of us have been lucky enough to experience either a Tiger or Family Day Cruise. Whether you are in the planning stages for one or hoping to sail with your Sailor when they return from deployment. Share your hints and experiences here---
but always remember, posting port dates or too many details about upcoming events can pose a security risk....so use good judgment about what you post here!

I am hoping to be on the Abe Lincoln Tiger Cruise. Should I be expecting any forms to be mailed to me from the Navy? My son, who's on board the Abe tried to e-mail me some docs but I couldn't open them. Not sure what to do next....

Robert, I couldn't agree more!! I went on the first Tiger Cruise aboard the USS George HW Bush CVN 77. You don't realize how long the ship is and how long you'll wait in line to dis-embark off the ship! My son had 2 sea bags, 2 pairs of boots and a full back pack that I had to help carry. So, a word to the wise, take a small duffle bag! I agree with toiletries bag! Most of all, have fun!! Think about the people around us that will never have the opportunity to be aboard any one of the fine vessels of the greatest navy in the world!! Enjoy! Oh yes, and take lots of pictures!!! Being aboard, and on the flight deck as the sailors man the rails as the ship comes in to port is something you don't want miss!

Bring as little as possible, it is a long walk to and from the ship and especially from, your sailor will have his own load to handle. Sleeping bag is not necessary, your Sailor will procure you clean sheets and pillow case, my son's division LPO got me a brand new pillow.

Gym shorts are more practical than a robe. All my toiletries I put in a bag with a strap that hung  over the shower door hangers, my son said that was genius and got one for himself. As for shower shoes, regular flip flops with the between the toe strap work great. If you can stand on one foot long enough dry them with the hand dryer before leaving the head.

Bring snacks, food lines are long and the food is not that great. Watch the express bar and fruit bar for more agreeable food.

Any questions? I will be more than happy to reply.

I think you are right Jeffrey. My son has been working with his unit admin. and we know that my husband is going to go. It sounds like it is going to be awesome! I am so thrilled that my son and my husband will be able to share this experience. I am also hoping that I would get to go but recognize that there are so many people who want to go. If there are not many women who want to go my chances are a little better but my son has already started easing me into the idea of me not getting to go. What a chance of a lifetime all of the ones going will have. So glad you get to go.

I went on the USS Reagan from Honolulu to San Diego in September and it was easily a "top 5" trips of my lifetime!
