Some of us have been lucky enough to experience either a Tiger or Family Day Cruise. Whether you are in the planning stages for one or hoping to sail with your Sailor when they return from deployment. Share your hints and experiences here--- but always remember, posting port dates or too many details about upcoming events can pose a security risk....so use good judgment about what you post here!

Looking forward to the upcoming Bush Tiger cruise!
Sorry if I implied the communication issue to be the Sailors fault, what I meant was exactly what Tom said. I was not sure about my cruise until I got to speak to my son during a port call.
My cruise was aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Can't say I enjoyed every minute of it but would not pass up the opportunity to do it again.
I just went on a Tiger Cruise on the Reagan (CVN-76) last month and my experience was that there were two main reasons for slow communication from my son after knowing I had been invited. First, the sailors often do not have a lot of free time and second, the internet on the ship is very slow for non-essential communication and also very limited for personal use. I would say that it is not that your sailor does not want to communicate but that he has limits on when he can do so. Add to that the security issues and you have a recipe for frustration. I suggest patience. Your sailor will get the necessary info to you!
My son emailed me the forms. I filled them out, scanned them then emailed them back. It is entirely up to your sailor to keep you informed on details, which can be tough with lack of proper communication.
Cannot answer either of you...I flew from Tucson to Jacksonville, stayed overnight just off the airport, took a hotel shuttle the next morning to the airport and rode one of the Navy provided buses from JAX to the ship at Mayport. In Norfolk Eric and I took a taxi from the NEX to the hotel.
Ken,
When my son called me he said it was $100 for the bus ride from Norfolk to Mayport, I'm not sure what time it leaves.
I have a question for the group, I'm driving to Mayport. What's the procedure for getting from the gate to the ship. Will they let you drive on the base with proper documentation, or do I need to figure out a way to get from the gate to the ship?
Thanks,
Thanks for the info so far.
Got a question about getting to Mayport. My thoughts are to drive to Norfolk arriving there the day before meeting the ship, fly Southwest direct to JAX the afternoon before meeting the ship, stay overnight near the airport and meet at the USO to get the bus to the base the morning we meet the ship.
My son emailed me today asking if I want to take the bus from Norfolk BUT didn't give me any other info. Does anyone know when the bus typically leaves Norfolk and what the approx. cost might be?
I'm assuming the bus will be cheaper than the flight but if it requires getting to Norfolk in the early morning the day before we meet the ship, I'll have to take and extra day off work (and that takes away from the days I'll be able to spend with my son when he gets home on leave).
Thanks!
@Ron Schultz: As I recall your sailor should be able to email the forms to you. Also I think the forms are available on your sailors ship website.
I will be going on a Tiger Cruise. The question I have is how do I get the Medical/Dental Screening form? Does the FRG send it to you?
@ken-55: I went on the Enterprise tiger Cruise back in July. Information is very slow and scarce regarding the exact dates, times and locations due to security concerns. Once you are given the forms to fill out just be sure to complete them properly and return them as quickly as possible. Your sailor will have to pay the fee of around $65.00 and then you are set. Don't expect many details until right before the cruise. I am talking only days before! There will be hotel and transportation information available on your sailors ship web page well in advance, but there will not be specific dates. Again, once your paperwork is in and your fee paid your sailor will get a confirmation and then you just sit tight until you hear from your sailor about the exact arrival date and time. I strongly suggest purchasing a refundable plane ticket if you need to fly, because the date does not become definite until it is only a week or two before arrival in port.
