Bags are packed and I leave in a few hours but won't connect with the sub until mid week. Taking a Nook with some books on it. Will report what I can when I surface and get back home!

Only a week to go until my Tiger Cruise on my son's sub and a few developments. Our departure has been pushed back a day so I will have an extra day and hotel stay until we leave. Decided to rent a car so I can get around the city of our departure.

My son said I can not bring my iPhone as no phones with cameras or recording options are allowed on the big subs for security reasons. I would have figured that they would just collect them on arrival and give them back as we leave the sub but he said he didn't believe they would do that and would just not allow them. Since I have 2 days in the city from where we are departing from and one day in the city where we get off before flying home, I would prefer to have a phone, we get spoiled I guess. He suggested I buy a prepaid phone which has few bells and whistles but now I think I will just take my iPhone and the day before our cruise I will mail it to the hotel I am staying at on the return and have them hold it for me.

He also told me to bring things to do when he is on duty and can not entertain me. Not sure if I just wait around for him somewhere of if there will be other things for all the participants to do. Guess I will get time to read those books I got for Christmas presents recently.

And he suggested I pack lightly but also bring warm clothes as it is rather chilly on the sub.

Air demo on my cruise was perhaps an hour, maybe hour and a half.  We were on deck for the cat shots, but due to safety issues we were NOT allowed on deck for recovery. Off time....a carrier is pretty large and most folks wandered around with their sailors poking their noses where they could.  The was a movie and some entertainment, but you're on a carrier so who really cares about that.  I've never heard about an overnight day cruise so don't know if there is anything planned or not....Kat helped tour VIPs on the Abe's day cruise so they may have things planned.

Looking for some help! I have a customer at my real job that served in the Navy 40yrs ago aboard a carrier. He wanted to take a day cruise on a modern carrier and has been granted permission to do so. He's wondering how long is the air show while at sea? He says they spend the night aboard the ship for one night. Do they only show one demonstration or do they do more than one over the two days? Will he see them catapult a jet off the deck and recover it?

They're letting him go on the USS Stennis at the end of March. He has to respond to them tomorrow by noon. Is it worth the trip for him to fly to San Diego to do this? He wants to know what he'll do in the off time. Are their tours, movie shows, etc. I need a quick response if someone has answers to these questions. He's calling me tomorrow morning.

I'm sure these questions might have the answers in previous post but I don't have time to research.

Thanks,

I haven't been so fortunate of having the opportunity to participate in a Tiger Cruise like so many of you have or will be.  But, I am headed to San Diego in a couple of weeks to attend a Family Day Cruise with my son on the destroyer USS Howard (DDG83).  My last experience on a Family Day Cruise was a long time ago as a child on an LSD called the Alamo.  It was a thrill for me then and I'm sure this one will be a great time as well.

Received my medical clearance form for my upcoming Sub cruise and it is pretty basic, only 1 1/2 pages long. Mainly asks if I can climb up a 20 ft ladder or walk 200 feet without getting winded. Did not ask for any type of physical exam by my doctor or meds I might be taking.

My son did check yesterday and said that under new security rules no cameras are allowed on Ohio class ballistic missile subs any longer or at least his one which just went through a major overhaul in port, new everything... Oh well, at least Alzheimer's isn't and issue so this will be a trip for the memory banks!

I don't know about the camera, although I expect that they ARE allowed, perhaps with restrictions about usage in some spaces.  Have your son check.

To answer your other question, your son should kick your butt if you decide not to go.  It will be the trip of a lifetime.

Hello, I posted my question in the general discussion area before finding this group, sorry for the duplication.

My son is a Lieutenant on an Ohio class Sub based in Bangor, WA. He will be completing his sea tour duty this spring (Blue Crew I think) and recently invited me to go on a Tiger Cruise. We spoke yesterday (he is on shore for about a week before deploying again) and the cruise will start with participants embarking at the Sub base in San Diego and make it's way back to the base in Bangor, approx 7 days along the Pacific coast.

I am a photographer by profession and one thing I was looking forward to doing was photographing the event from my photo journalist perspective but when I mentioned that he wasn't completely sure if cameras would be allowed. Anyone know if this is correct? I've done some Google searches and have seen photos from both above the water and below the water cruises. Maybe it's a new regulation. I'm used to traveling light and figure I'll be fine with a few changes of clothes, toiletries, etc. Any other suggestions?

So far all he has asked me for was my SS# to submit with my DOB. At some point will I receive some kind of paper work or application?

I am an average guy for my age, 54... fairly good health but could shed a few pounds. I am not particularly claustrophobic but don't like to be uncomfortable! Does a Sub TC sound like something an old guy like me could do?

Thanks.
