Stennis Strike Group Enters 7th Fleet Area of Operations
Story Number: NNS120119-05

From John C. Stennis Strike Group Public Affairs

USS JOHN C. STENNIS, At Sea (NNS) -- John C. Stennis Strike Group (JCSSG) entered the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations(AOO) Jan. 19 after nearly three months supporting Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF) and New Dawn (OND), as well as maritime security operations and anti-piracy efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOO.

While operating in the seas surrounding the Arabian Peninsula, JCSSG played a pivotal role in the drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq and provided aviation support to coalition ground troops in Afghanistan.

After conducting weeks of command and control support operations to coalition forces in OND, an E-2C Hawkeye from the "Golden Hawks" of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 112 embarked aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) flew the last Navy aviation mission over Iraq Dec. 18.

"Flying the last Navy air mission in Iraq was a historic achievement for all of us," said Capt. Dale Horan, commander of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 embarked aboard Stennis, the flag ship of the strike group.

"Everyone in this strike group played a part in making that happen and it's a part of history we will always share," Horan said.

In January, after transitioning from OND to supporting operations in Afghanistan, JCSSG forces thwarted an attempted pirate attack on a Bahamian-flagged cargo vessel, then freed a group of Iranian mariners held captive by the same crew of suspected pirates.

"This was a well-executed display of the mutli-mission capability of the carrier strike group and a testament to the professionalism of our Sailors," said Stennis' Command Master Chief Stanley Jewett.

In the 7th Fleet AOO, the strike group plans to conduct several readiness exercises with partner countries in the region as well as visits to Singapore and the Philippines before preparing to head back to the United States.

"The manner in which we've conducted ourselves and executed our mission is indicative of the character of our Sailors and the spirit of our country," said JCSSG commander, Rear Adm. Craig Faller. "While we have much to accomplish before returning home, and I'm confident that we will finish our deployment with the same level of professionalism and personal conduct we've displayed throughout."

The JCSSG consists of Stennis, the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), aircraft from CVW 9, and guided missile destroyers USS Pinckney (DDG 91), USS Kidd (DDG 100), USS Dewey (DDG 105), and USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) from Destroyer Squadron 21.

you're okay...it's just a reminder how easy it is to post to much info!!!!  I've been there and have almost done it as well....it was just a reminder to everyone!!!

So sorry Paul, I will be more careful in the future. I was trying not to mention dates or places but forgot about times. Thank you for reminding me. It is so important and I need to always remember that. We always need to protect our sailors as they have been protecting us.

Please remember OPSEC...I'll let the times slide as there is not date, but please remember the security guidelines.  I know with the excitement of the cruise and seeing your sailors it is easy to get lost int he moment, but regardless of what is said in Washington theer are still folks that do not like the US and as a result we must be ever vigilant and on alert.  That being said, if you think SEEING them line the rails from shore is impressive, wait until you are on the flight deck and seeing it from the "other side"...you can read my impressions of the the day at this link

Hi folks, love reading your comments about the cruise. It is getting me excited to read them. My husband and I have the good fortune to go on the first leg. Kevin, I have always dreamed of seeing the manning the rails because it just brings such pride up in me to live in America with the finest men and women in the world serving our country. My son wrote yesterday that he is not sure what Pier they will be coming in but will let me know as soon as he finds out. He said that they will be docking around 9:30 a.m. and if we want to see them come in we need to be there by 8:00 at the latest. I can't hardly wait. It will be awesome!  I agree with you David, that it will be an honor to board the ship and see what my son and many others of the crew have been doing. I too have great respect for the sailors and their families because they all make great sacrifices to better protect our country and our freedom.

My wife & I are going on the first leg of the upcoming TC, does anyone know the best place to watch the ship come in? I would love to see it pull in with them manning the rails.

I agree with Paul as he said this is an active warship and not a cruise ship, but am grateful for the opportunity to be allowed on the same ship that my son is serving on and be with him and all the crew that has been away from there loved ones on this deployment.

I have great respect for the sailors and their families for their sacrifices that they have made.

I am very proud of my son and thank all who have served.  We have the greatest military in the world.

Its going to be great. Sleep in the rack under my son. (He already set that up) Eat in the mess, Navy food. Its not going to be like a cruise I would not want it to be any other way! Im proud of my Son and I want to see his place. Cant wait!

just wanted to remind all, if they have not gone through the Tiger Cruise group and read some of the posts and blogs, that a carrier is not a cruise ship so anybody expecting nice amenitites is going to be disappointed....you'll be on a active warship coming back from a several-month long deployment........you gonna LOVE it!!!  And for the rest of us, you Tigers please soak it in, take thousands of photos, and get set to write some bogs about your experience!!!!!
