No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

As a former sailor myself, I can attest to the Navy's motto "Taking care of their own". For those concerned, don't worry- the Navy goes to great length to ensure your son/ daughter is taken care of. Safety and health are paramount to the USN.

WTI stands for Weapons Turnover Inspection and ZONE is not an acronym, it's an overall inspection of divisional compartment.

On Friday we finally got our first letter from our son Joseph! The hardest part was walking past it all day while it sat on the counter and not opening it.... I must have picked it up, and set it down a dozen times! I told my wife I'd wait until she got off work so we could open it together. That was a tall order, but I waited. It is an indescribable feeling to hear from him. Even if only a page, scratched out in a few moments he had on Christmas day. Mostly relief. A positive letter! Then Saturday we got another one... Obviously out of order, because this one was without a doubt written well before the other. The tone was much more consistent with a civilian acclimating to military life. A bit of culture shock I would imagine. Joseph left for boot camp in great shape. He prepared well in advance. So I was surprised to hear how fatigued he was initially. Nonetheless, we were glad to hear from him, and his talk of lifelong friends he was making.
