No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Awesome, Gary. We all have the right to be proud, because all the Sailors are doing a great job. We've been able in the last couple years to have contact with our Navy girl via email or Skype (if they were in port) even when she's been deployed. Except - but I knew it in advance - when they were on exercises and in radio blackout over last Father's Day. I knew, but it was still disappointing.
Got the letter today. However, his division and PIR date have changed. Ship 4, but when he called, he couldn't remember the division, or mailing address. Would Public Affairs have that info?
you should have received the letter by now....you may want to confirm address and find out about password if your are going to park on base for PIR: Phone: Public Affairs Office 847-688-2405
Paul, those quick calls have been the ONLY communication we've had since he left. We got the box, but still no form letter. He arrived at Great Lakes Dec 4. Now his address has changed. At least I was able to talk to him a couple times, so I know he's doing well.
Got to remind everyone not to expect calls over the holidays.....if you get them it's great, but if not, please don't be disappointed. Unless your sailors are close to PIR, holidays are generally treated as training days.
Strong work Brian! I can't wait to hear from my son. He went in 12-12-12 and we just got "the box" yesterday so he is still of the grid with regards to any communication, written or otherwise. How long had it been since you heard from from him once he shipped out for RTC other than the brief call signalling his arrival there?
Got his call this morning, saying he is now in the FAST program. Starts his classroom stuff tomorrow. Also said he had a little trouble with the prone float during the swim test. He said t was just because he's not used to swimming with all those clothes on, and he'd beat it the next time around. :) So he's got a pretty good mindset. I told him there is nothing he can't accomplish once he sets his mind to it. He started out in one of the performance divisions, and said they would try to get him into another one after FAST. All in all, he sounded really good. A little choked up when it was time to say goodbye, but so was Dad. Thanks for the help and the comments. I try to remember my own Boot Camp experiences, but it's not quite the same as having a child doing it now. Happy to have this site, and all of you!
Brian H. The Navy is going to do your son good! Have faith in your son he will do great things. As dads we tend to tell our kids what to do and how to do them. Now, that is the Navy's job. Your job is to be the unwavering base of support he'll need to get through the next few weeks. The main suggestion my wife shares from Navyformoms.com is to always be encouraging in our comments to our future sailors. Bear in mind, he went into the Navy because he wanted to. He has goals he set himself and has a vision of the man he wants to be and because of this desire his learning will come easier and more meaningful. He'll do great things and become the man he wants to be.
