No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Generally, they begin with what is referred to as P days (processing)...filling out form after form...usually about 5 days before training really begins....

Thanks Paul, and Paul!  Paul Olson, your brother sounds a lot like my boy.  When he reads something, he gets it, but has trouble getting it back out.  He's never been diagnosed with dyslexia, but thats what it seems like to me.  His handwriting is not good, either.  This FAST program may be just what he needs to overcome it.

Not with my recruit but with my brother several years ago when he went in.  The first letter home from my brother was literally unintelligible. This came from a kid that had graduated from a public school system a year prior!  The Navy found him to have severe dyslexia and some other learning disability.  God Bless the US Navy because in a very short order of time his letters came home full of experiences and tales; it was like they tapped into a part of his brain screaming to tell his story but some how trapped inside until then!  I don't know you sailor's story but I can tell you from my experience, if it takes 2 weeks or 4 weeks or more, your sailor will benefit far beyond your expectations.

this is what I've found on the FAST program:

The Fundamental Applied Skills Training (FAST) program is for recruits with limited literacy or verbal skills. FAST focuses on two areas: verbal skills and literacy. These programs are designed to help recruits understand technical manuals and speak English as a second language. About 15 recruits are enrolled in FAST at any time during training, with the average duration in the program for two to four weeks. Of those placed in FAST, 98 percent complete boot camp.

Got a quick call from my SR this morning.  He needed more references (non-family members).  That was quickly taken care of.  He also said he may be calling again in a couple days, said he might be getting ASMO'd 2 weeks for the FAST program.  I know what ASMO means, but don't know a lot about the FAST program.  Anyone else been through this with their SR?

My "Mom" information came from a single Navy mom who's the daughter of a Navy dad and sister of a Navy brother ... her son and my son are also close friends. Her son is on active duty bravely serving our country ... Go Navy!

I'd like to acknowledge the guys that had the foresight to put this site together.  I'm new to this and don't have an idea for what I don't know!  I have spent many hours searching this site and reading the extensive information compiled to date and I'm astounded at how much more informed I have become in just 48 hours.  Thanks.

Just for an FYI. It's been a while since I have seen this posted and for all of the new members, you can get free phone cards for your SR's so that they can call home. Just go to the www.callsforrecruits.org website and email them. I have done this for mine and he used them yesterday when he called home plus he has given away some to other SR.
