No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

I thought this might be helpful for the December recruit Dads. I came across this on the "Navy for Moms" web site. Great information.

Craig,
I went through GL for boot camp back in 1984.
Gary S - A "ship" at boot camp is truly just a building. They call it a ship just to get the newbies to start using that word.
- Each ship (building) has its own name. For example, Ship 12, the USS Triton.
- Each ship has 3 different floors.
- On each floor they have 4 divisions. So you have 3 floors x 4 divisions = 12 divisions per ship.
- Each division has ~80 sailors, so you have 80 sailors x 12 division = 960 sailors per ship. So you can say, the USS Triton has 960 sailors on it.
- What people get messed up on is they think each ship graduates (PIR) on the same date. It doesn't. One a few divisions will graduate. You can a couple divisions from USS Triton Ship-12, a couple from USS Arizona Ship 14, maybe 4 divisions the USS Kearsarge Ship 11, and maybe four divisions from the USS Chicago Ship 7. So at PIR (gaduation) many ships are represented.
Here is what the ships look like. All ships are exactly the same since they were contacted at the same time.
This is the USS Triton Ship-12:
Just got the Arrival call from my son at 10:20 pm tonight. He said he'll be able to call again in 3 weeks. Now just waiting for the letter with his address so I can start mailing letters!
Just came back from a wonderful PIR weekend with my new sailor. He is staying in Great lakes for A school, so, I had a chance to spend the weekend with him. I want to give a shout out for two restaurants that treated him very well: Gale Street Inn in Mundelein and Trattoria Pomigliano in Libertyville. Gale Street Inn took 50% off his 20oz porterhouse and gave him a free desert. Trattoria gave him a free meal. Both gave him a very sincere thank you for his service and made him feel special. That made dad very happy! I didn't mind saving the money either.
Hi Folks,
This is directed to any parents that have recruits in currently in that want to hear what's going on, and stay in touch with other parents. My Son is Ship 11 Div 057, with a Graduation date of January 11, 2013 and I have started a group titled by ship and division, but with only three parents aboard, I am happy to ask others in the same spot, no matter what ship and division to JOIN US! They will graduate before we know it, so if you have things to share, come in and join us.
think ship = large barracks and division about 80-90 sailors......typically as I recall 5-7 divisions in a ship at once
Yes, there can be multiple divisions on a ship. When your recruit gets to the fleet that's how a ship is set up. There might be an engineering division, an operations division, etc. etc.
Just out of curiosity, how many ships are there per division? Can the same ship be in 2 different divisions? The reason I ask is that I saw a group with the same ship (Ship 11) but a different division (Div 057) than my sons Ship 11 Div .058. Both are graduating on 1/11/13 according to schedule.
