No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Yippee. We just got the SI Form letter from Daniel. I think our mail lady held it back just to keep us nervous,lol.... Anyhow, Dans on 12-054 with PIR scheduled 01/11/13 if theres any other Dads with recruits on this ship and divission, please keep in touch.
right on again Chris....I tend to work Christmas day and got a call from Eric in Dubai a few years ago to wish me Merry Christmas....I was on my way to work at about 04:30....any time, any place that call may or may not come....be prepared with charged batteries!!!
Jeff, those are the inclusive division numbers (045-052) for that training group for the particular PIR
Or, Paul, when they do get a holiday call while deployed, it might be 3:30 a.m. "our time" because they've just gotten off a rotation, or managed to get to the phone three minutes before they're back on duty and really have no clue what time it is back home. You're just grateful they've managed to remember. We need to remember these young people are on duty, especially when deployed, and "at work" during their entire months and months of deployment (except maybe when in port), and don't have "day jobs." Our daughter worked six hours on, six off for more than eight months on deployment. It isn't easy at all. This "separation anxiety" at Boot Camp is nothing, parents. Think of it as "our" camp and preparation. :)
Thanks Paul for the quick response... I presume that 045-052 means, and I don't want to seem "thick", groups 045, 046, 047, 048..etc?
Just trying to get it right in my mind.
Daniel,
He got there on 11/6... What ship is your sailor on? We didn't receive a call yesterday either, but I really didn't expect one. hopefully we will get one on Sunday.
You got it Chris! Everyone thinks our sailors have so much to learn at bootcamp, but their parents have just a much to learn.....this is all part of the process. They are very rigorous for the first couple of weeks...the RDCs have to break down all the barriers and misconceptions while dealing with homesickness.....after that (about week 3) they can start building them into sailors. Meanwhile, the parents have to get used to the idea of their sailors being out of comm....when deployed, they might not get email or phone for several weeks at a time....I've told the story many times about son Eric being deployed on the Theodore Roosevelt and Hamid Karzai being scheduled for a visit. Due to security, comms were locked down for a couple of weeks....all part of being in the Navy!!!
LOL! Our daughter completed boot, A School, was assigned to a destroyer, got a short leave, then deployed until "next year" then we got to do a Tiger Cruise (more information is around here) from Hawaii to San Diego. Through all this, we had emails when possible, Skype sessions when the ship was in U.S. controlled bases, shared holiday photos from the destroyer's Facebook, etc. Then they were on a joint exercise with about 15,000 or more of their Army, Marine, Coast Guard and Air Force buddies, and were in radio/communication silence over Father's Day weekend. Just when you believe everything is under control, the service will let you know exactly what they think of assumptions. LOL! Flow with it, friends. Our Navy girl wasn't able to make it home for Thanksgiving this year, but does have leave scheduled for Christmas. We're grateful for many things, and the occasional visits are accepted with happiness.
it's a hard thing for the new parents to deal with what with the new recruits just arriving at RTC and all......after about week 3 things start to change and the recruits are treated more like sailors.....
Thanks Paul. Thats what I figured and know that its a privilege that requires earning. Hopefully by Christmas.
