No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Proud Dad, if your wife (if you have one) isn't already on Navy4moms.com, tell her to get on. It is similar to this site, but the ladies really help each other cope with the separation from her offspring. Go read and you will see what I mean. :)

Brian, each A-School is different and has different policies. My son is going to Monterey for language school. Out there, they have phases (I think they all do) where they qualify for more privileges base on accomplishing certain academic and physical requirements. However, he can have a cell and computer right off the bat. Phase 1 they must wear the uniform or PT gear at all times and have limited on-base liberty. Phase 2 - still in uniform but with limited off-base liberty Phase 3 - normal attire and liberty hours.

StevenS and Proud Dad- We did exactly the same thing. He said it made the final part of the trip, the bus ride to GL, muc more bearable. Also, his final call came from his cell, not the phone bank phones. One father on here missed his son's call because he used a friend's phone. The other kid was from Arizona and the father didn't recognize the area code and didn't answer.

Let him know to REALLY try to get a good night's sleep before he leaves. He will be up for over 40 straight hours!

Proud Dad ~ If yours has a cell and text, let him take it. We dropped my son off at the recruiters the day before he was to leave from Dallas. They took him to a hotel and he called us and said we could take him to dinner. After dinner we said good bye and texted each other all night and the next day while he waited for his flight at the airport. When he landed in Chicago he was texting his mom. The "last" call was from him cell saying "he was there" and a bunch of kids were freaking out cause they only got a minute to talk. Then it was in the box and on the way home. It takes some of the drama out of the final call if your into that. We were sorta glad they threw it in the box.. : )

If he's IS, you'll not be told what language. It's the perfect job for young adults: they don't want to talk about stuff, and this job won't let 'em.

Write letters, but don't count on getting many back. Unless your son is very determined to write.

We found out that he was assigned a language this week, a middle eastern language. We don't know which one though. Once he finishes school he will be stationed in Georgia.

The girlfriend got a call today. He is doing well and not sick anymore. They got a new RDC, one that doesn't yell as much. He doesn't stand watch anymore, so he is getting more sleep.
