No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Check with your sailors A-school command, they are all different and you MUST have permission to have those item. Be ready to get them, or bring them so if they are allowed to have them you can switch the service to GL area. Cricket is cheap and the best service on base from what we were told and our son is using it already and says he have full bars on service. I-chat is the best thing ever!!!

no difference...the base is across the street from RTC...while at RTC NO ELECTRONICS......some A-schools are more strict than others about the PC and cell...cannot have until first phase is finished, but I think that is a decision of A-shcool command

So - just so I am straight on this, if they are attending A school at GL, then they can have a computer & a phone? Why the difference if they attend A school elsewhere?

Mitch,
Tony said he saw Matt, but he must have been heading out the door. Is Matt doing A-school at GL? We had so much good luck. We found all his uniforms that he needed and the elusive black ear muffs, He found them at the train staition across from gate 3. Tony was allowed to buy a computer and Cell phone. They say Cricket is the best service on base. Cheap too.
Good luck to Matt!

They let you walk in and they seat you at Silo's no reservation needed. Our sailor found out he was Grad and Go the morning of Graduation. We missed 4 hours of visit time on Friday but we didn't have to take him back to base until Monday night, due to holiday. Save your parking pass if he is grad and go, as you will need it to get onto base through main gate for the week end. It also let us go to the NEX on base to get uniforms that is the only uniform NEX, and they will need stuff. There is a window to get name tags made at the back and when they have there name tag they can wear the blue sweater. It was very cold so a sweater is nice to have. There was only one place to get the ear muffs the sailors are allowed to wear. The NEX did not have it but the train station across from gate 3 had plenty. They have plenty of computers at the NEX and your sailor can buy them tax free if his A-school allows it. Don't buy it unless he has permission. The best cell service is Cricket and it is also the cheapest if he is at GL for A-school. You can also get a wireless cell card for internet connection. Gurnee Mill Mall has a cricket kiosk.

Norman: We just walked in and was served. There is an upstairs and downstairs seating area and looks like it can hold quite a few people.

Jim: We have known since our son was in DEP that he was staying there in GL but it wasn't until he processed into the main side after graduation that he found out when he had duty and when he had to be back.

Mark: I didn't see any but we were there pretty early and whipped right through check in. Even though they said this graduation was the largest they have had in a long time I did see empty seats on the upper deck.

Greg: It was too bad Matt didn't say anything earlier or I would have come over and met you guys. Maybe next time.

Is Silo's a place you need to make reservations for or can you just walk in and be served?

When did you folks find out your sailor was Grad&Go?
