No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Dan, it looks like the boy is writting a paragraph a day until he fills a page then drops it in the mail. He says they started shooting live rounds this week. Christmas was tough he said. The 7 hours of "lazy" time was the first time since he got there that he had the time to miss every body. Says it was no fun. He told little brother that he was enjoying getting paid to work out. They were told they would get a 15 minute phone call on Christmas, but "somebody lied". Other than that no new news really. He says they, the Nukes, are flying out Saturday morning. : ( I recon that better than Friday right after PIR.. 2/5/10

Steve, how can you see what the postmark is??? LOL! the only thing I was able to make out on ALL his letters is PALASTINE, IL. -- I am unable to read the postmark date. The son hasn't written the dates on most of his letters... except for the one that said "Merry Christmas - I'm shining my boots" LOL! :)

Scott, I like your badge. My ship operated with the "Forestfire" and USS America most of the time. It was either one or the other.

We got letters today posted the 2nd. It looks like the mail is moving a little quicker for ship4div76 now. LOL... They had a meeting with the Nuke's last Thursday and my son sent home a itinerary for the next 1.5 years. If anyone has any basic Nuke questions, I might be able to help you out. I'll share what I know up till now.

Mark, very well put, you should be a Navy Counseler! One more thing to add is if SCE waits for the E4 and Duty Station, they may be able OR not able to even live in base housing. Once he get the orders after A School, go directly to the Base or ship Web Site and look at checking in married or something close to that on the tabs, there is a lot of information that will be essential for you to know as a married couple!

SCE, I will make one last recommendation for you. Again, take this in the spirit for which it is intended. The Navy has the highest divorce rate of the services, and for good reason. It is tough being separated for long periods of time. The Navy is on the go whether they are "deployed" or not. It is not uncommon to go on 2-3 month cruises that are not considered deployments. If I was in your shoes, I would wait and see how you handle the Navy life. I saw several of my married buddies end up in divorce court because their wife couldn't handle the difficulties that come with being a Navy wife.

SCE, being former Navy, I would recommend waiting until he gets to his permanent duty station. The hoops are the same, but a little quicker. He will need his commanding officer's permission to get married. During A-School he needs to pay attention and do the best he can. Navy schools aren't like high school or college. They are difficult and he can't afford to fall behind. Don't take this the wrong way, but he needs to concentrate on his studies before a new wife. It will benefit you both in the future. In addition, during A-School he can't live with you off base. Next is the money issue. Even as an E3 it would be very tight on his salary. Waiting until he makes E4 will help somewhat.

Of course you do, however , sometimes it's better to wait and see what the situation is, to make sure that you two will have the necessary time available to do all of the things required for that move...finding an apt, drivers licenses, paperwork, insurance, utilities, etc. Some guys end up on deployment within days of leaving A school...just don't know sometimes, and for a major move like that, you're going to want him around :) If he was going to be shipping out the week you got there...well...you'd be just as well off right where you are, as you have support systems in place and you know your way around.
Just sayin ;)

He can always come home on leave, which is what I did :) I don't think being single has a lot to do with it. My understanding is that for most jobs, unless he's got some very strange rare job, they're pretty much needed everywhere, so his chances of going where he asks to go are actually pretty good.

I recall in 1972, when I was coming home from Germany to get married, I had to first get permission from my Company Comander, not fot the trip home, that had to be approved anyway, but specifically to get married while I was there.
Granted, that's a very long time ago, but some things never change, SCE :)

In the long run, if you love each other, it won't matter :)
