No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

SCE, on Navy 4 Moms, there is a group called Great Lakes A School questions and answers. There are plenty of mothers, spouses and girl friends of sailors in that group. I know the marriage question has been tossed around among the ladies and I am sure you will be able to find an answer to your marriage question in that group. Gary T.

I see no reason he will not have liberty for PIR week-end if he transfers. That question will best be answered the day of PIR when your sailor will know for sure.

Now with ref to marriage, that must be done the NAVY way. Your sailor will have to jump through a few hoops before marriage can be done. There are too many questions to be answered and addressed before you achieve that mile stone. Remember he is a sailor in the US NAVY and he now belongs to them. Some questions are rate, type of A-School, length of time to be spent in GL, and many many more. I do believe when your sailor attends I.N.D.O.C. he should ask these questions and I am sure he will be given the answers. Gary T.

SCE, my son had his PIR 13 Mar 09. He was not classified as a Grad and Go but did have his A-School in Great Lakes. He did transfer immediately after graduation and yes the wait was around 3 to 4 hours. Once on the A-School side he was given liberty from the time he was released until Sunday night at 9:00 PM. It is advisable they return to the base by 7 PM as the walk to there new ship may take awhile.

If your sailor does not immediately transfer he will remain on the BC side and must return each night and may be assigned duty during his wait to transfer to the A-School side.

It seems all new sailors who transfer to the A-School side of the base are initially housed in the Enterprise while they attend I.N.D.O.C. training. (about a 30 minute walk). The Enterprise is the oldest remaining ship on the base and it is scheduled to be torn down sometime in the future. New sailors must always wear there uniforms until they phase up.

Once I.N.D.O.C. is completed they will be assigned to another temp ship or to a permanent ship. The liberty rules of that ship will prevail. A new sailor will have to study and test for their Phase 2 (Civilian Clothing & week-end liberty) which may take a week to ten days or even longer. Once they complete these requirements they then submit a Chit requesting a deviation from policy to be allowed to wear civilian clothing while on Liberty. A full weekend liberty while on the A-School side usually occurs every fourth week. Duty call is usually every fourth day. Hope I helped any further questions please ask. Gary T.

If your bf stays at RTC after PIR and does not go to the A school side you most likely will get to see him during the days of the weekend but he will have to be back each night by 8 pm. While on the RTC side they have more restrictions than when they move to the A school side.

If he is not grad and go, and he does not have watch, he will have the standard post graduation liberty. If he is grad and go and has to check in on Mainside, he will most likely be given liberty following check-in and it will be up to his A School as to how his liberty will work. Since it is a weekend, they may just tell him to report Monday.

Steve, at one time, Dam Neck had the best chow hall in the Navy! We used to love to go there for training. What A School is James going to?

James' A school will be in Virginia, Dam Neck. Those sound like good restaurants.

Grad and go does not necessarily mean they are leaving GL. My son was grad n go but only went to the A school side of the base. He said it meant that he had to leave RTC side right away. It was good for us because we got him the whole weekend! We went to a steak place in Gurnee called "Backyard Steak Pit" because all my sailor wanted was beef the way it was meant to be eaten! It was really good. My son said it was the best ribeye he had ever had.

Steve...if he is grad-n-go you may literally only have minutes with him....so be flexible. We have one dad here that got about 5 minutes with his daughter....but would not have missed the experience for the world.
