No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

My son asked for his contacts, a warm solo shower and Chicago pizza. LOL

My son, James, worked for the last several years as a waiter in a couple of very fancy restaurants in Savannah and in Washington DC. He developed champagne tastes with our root beer budget.
He's already said that the food is good in BC, but that what he wants when he graduates is to go to a really good restaurant and get a gourmet meal.
Does anyone know any place near Great Lakes that we could go to? He is probably Grad and go, so we won't have much time.

I have a close friend that has lived in Chicago her whole life. This is her recommendation for Chicago pizza.

For the true Chicago style pizza experience, you have to go to Lou Malnati’s. They have the best stuffed pizza EVER! They have a many locations, this one seems to be the closest to the base: 85 S. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089 (847) 215-7100. Their website is: loumalnatis.com"

We got our Battle Stations call on last Wednesday afternoon. (12-30-2009)
Mom got off the cell phone and said "Congratulations we have a baby squid!"
We laughed and went back to driving.
I guess that is what you get when you have a Marine Corporal who has done a couple of tours in the Sand.

Jim,
I appreciate the info. All my real cold weather clothes are camo for duck hunting which I wouldn't think would be a good idea to wear.

Hey Norman, back to the clothes deal...I just came in from plowing the 12" we got over the past day. What I wear ain't pretty, but it works. For my hat, I take a ballcap, and then put a navy watch cap on top of the ball cap. Best of both worlds...visor on the ball cap keeps the snow out of my eyes, and the watch cap on top pulls down over my ears...toasty warm, and wicked cheap too :)
I buy the watch caps at Wally World for about $2.99 ;)
Gloves are easy, then all you need is some jackets. Whoever pointed out the windbreaker is spot on...that's the biggest problem, wind bleeds the heat right out of your clothes, so you can do a cheap windbreaker over some layers of fleece or sweatshirts, and you'll be in pretty good shape.
Hate to see anyone put out big $$$ for something you may only use this once.

Jim

Paul,
Thanks for the info. The Silo sounds like what we are looking for. I can eat at a Chili's or an Outback at home. We would like to try somethinf with a local flavor.

JohnM used to live in the area and he posted this ages ago in the PIR group....may want to consider:

Lunch after PIR - PlanB for those people looking for more than routine chain restaurant fare. This is where the locals go. (I was once a local.)

The Silo in Lake Bluff

Voted the BESTpan pizza on the North Shore by the Chicago Tribune. Deep dish Chicago style pizza to die for.

Less than 10 minutes, from RTC, once you clear the traffic jam at the gate.

More than just fantastic pizza, everything your hungry Sailor has been dreaming of is in on the menu. Burgers, ribs, chili, steak, seafood, homemade cheese cake, etc., etc.

Left out of RTC, .5 mile
Left on Green Bay Road, 2 miles
Right on Rockland Road/SR176 1 mile
The Silo is on the right.

There's a $4 coupon on the website

Boy, getting old Nick, I read "dead pan pizza," as deep fried pizza, and thought, well, they've really gone off the deep end in Chicago. Only been there three times, and found they love to eat. Deep fried pizza seemed bad, but not impossible in a food town like Chicago.
