Hey Norm,
We live in Mass, which is a little warmer than GL, but not much lately :)
My wife and I have been firm believers in the coat "systems" that outfits like Columbia make, where there's a fleece liner and an outer coat that it zips into...gives you the ability to change the coat for whatever your needs are. You will need hats and possibly earmuffs, which my wife and I both wear, they're about $10 for a pair, they go around behind your head, not OVER it, so it's easy to wear a hat over them. Some gloves and you're in pretty good shape. Not sure where down there, but up here, there are "outlet" malls, and Columbia usually has stores in there.
Walmart has similar items, though probably not in La where you are ;)

You've got about a quarter of a mile to walk.....with the cold go layers...you can peel off what you don't want to wear. The wind will cut right through you...there is a good reason the Navy issues pea-coats! Exterior must be a tight-weave or leather to block the wind....I'm sure someone can give you some advice that is more specific...Jim Gramza...you live close...what is your recommendation?

Hey folks can you give my wife and I some advice on what to wear to deal with the winter weather in Great Lakes. We live in Monroe,LA and have no experience with that type of cold. We will need everything from top to bottom. PIR date is 1/29. Thanks!!

A comment on the A Schools and pre-study, do not study from the books as the USN will mix and match the chapters according to their plans anyway. As a retired police chief and ex-Master At Arms in the USN, I can give you first hand information on not trying to pre-study as the course and training changes due to the USN needs. Do not worry, they have a method to their madness and your sons or daughters will learn everything they need in the A Schools!

Mark, great post. My son has been Dep'd for almost one year for a guarenteed A-School (MAA). He also had been in the USN Sea Cadets since 10 yrs. old. Most of the "easy" stuff he learned in the Cadets. He has also spent the last five years at RTC for the Sea Cadet Boot Camp. He cannot wait for this Monday to arrive. At that point, he is with the USN and not home anymore. Parents must look at the USN life a little different and it is ONLY 8 weeks. They need to look at it as an extended summer camp with skills they will need for the rest of their careers. Parents must also understand the USN will teach them everything the Navy way as this is what they will need as 18yr olds operating Billion Dollars worth of equipment.

In closing, the US Navy has been very successful in they way they handle RTC (Boot Camp) just look around the world, where else could you get a bunch of 18yr olds to operate a Naval Ship, Plane, or anything else for that matter.

Mark - Great Post! The only thing the recruiter told my son to study in DEP was his General Orders and the Ranks of the USN. :) Zach did say when he got in it helped a lot!

The only method of contact for emergency is through the Red Cross. Right now the Navy Boot Camp site is down, so I can't give you the reference. This is the ONLY way permitted.

Hey guys maybe I am not wording this correctly. My son
spent the last seven months in DEP getting ready for boot camp and is loving every minute of it. His recruter gave him the web link to get the course study material for HM A-school. It came complete with questions and answers and it was full of additional study references. We are only looking for someone who has been through A-school as a corpsman to help us find out the order they might begin with in school. We don't want him studying EMT work if they are going to start with Anatomy and Physiology. Anitoli is prepared for A-school but he wants to try for Seaman to Admiral and if he places in the top of his class it makes it easier. We are trying to help him where we can. My father was 28 years Master Chief. I am familiar with the Navy too, but one thing I know for sure is that if you want something bad enough you will work for it and not wait for someone to drop it in your lap. Go Navy

Mark, I am Professional Counselor, working for Job Corps for 29 years and 10 months, called me yesterday to tell me that my child is in hospital, said he would call me back for the results of the studies, but still not known, as you can see in my post I turn to my son but the other sons of the companions who have their child in boot camp are reflections of support, which request was that if you could only have the information of some phones by Minister or counsejero to see how this and send him a Bible as a Professional Counselor and Father am one of those who care for their children no matter where they are still instructions that I am a role model for young, where they are taught social skills, independent living skills and employability skills, all lessons are good but how can you go and mention it with respect, in the Bible The Lord tells us that we must leave the children to fly, even so no matter how old you have one father no longer there is the right way, the wrong way, and the Navy way. I miss you mention it the hand of God. God Bless.

AMEN Mark - you echoed my sentiment exactly, I could never get into the Navy due to BAD hearing at age 18 - LOL! - But I come from a Navy family, Great Grand Dad, Grand Dad, All Uncle's and my Father... So I know the drill, in the long run - our kids are better off - period. It's less than 90 days folks - we will miss them ALOT more later in life, for MORE than 90 days....
I love my kid to death - but no one is prouder of her than I am...\
