Oh, and one more thing. Don't try to figure out the Navy. There is the "right way, wrong way and the Navy way". They do things their own way. It may not make sense to you, but I can assure you they have a good reason for doing it the way they do, albeit sometimes it is just tradition.

Ok guys, let me give you a "Navy 101" class. I was in the Navy for 11 years, so I can give some insight.

First of all, I am really shocked at some of the posts on here and on Navy4Moms. It sounds like many parents never spoke to the recruiter or watched the videos they have on Navy life. If would have made life much easier on you.

Here goes:

1) Your kids is in bootcamp. It is designed to break them down and build them back up into Sailors that don't question authority; not afraid to lead; and are trained to perform under the most strenuous of circumstances. They didn't sign up for a 9-5 job. One mother got a letter that her 'precious Johnny' didn't like it, can't handle it and wants out. They will let him out, but with a General Discharge, not Honorable and that will follow him the rest of his life. He is only a couple of weeks into this. Parents need to encourage them and ignore when they whine...it is normal.

2) Carlos, you can only contact your kid while they are in bootcamp via mail. You are not to call there and they won't let you speak to your kid unless there is a serious family issue, then you must go through the Red Cross.

3) Bootcamp is Bootcamp - they have no life and it is intended that way. A-school is a different matter. They now have a life. They can call whenever they want; they get liberty (get to leave base and have a good time). They will earn more privileges as they complete the "phases" of indoc (indoctrination) onto the base and into the program. Many will be put "on hold" while they wait for enough students to start a new class. During this time, they will clean, mow, paint and anything else they can do to be kept busy. The base has an education office that can help them with college classes if they desire. This is more appropriate for kids in the advanced rates with 2 year schools. THERE IS NOTHING FOR THEM TO STUDY IN ADVANCE. The Navy has set ways of teaching and training and there is no "do it on your own" . The schools are hard enough, they don't need to be looking to make it harder.

I guess when in doubt start at the beginning and go towards the end...worked in general for me through 600-level grad courses in biochem......
If he is grad-n-go to A-school he can probably keep the guide...if he needs to stay at RTC for awhile, he probably will not be able to keep it

Wow you guys are depressing me. If Anitoli gets put on hold for HM A-school, there is a reasorse that the Navy gives us to study the couse work.

However, we were looking for information on ths class schedules so he studies the information in the order it will be taught. If there are any Corpsman that have completed the schooling and can give us advise we would love to hear from you.
The study guide for the HM training was last printed in 2003 so it might be outdated alittle , but I am sure they review the same material today. We are planning on taking the printed study guide with us to graduation and wanted to know if Anitoli will be able to keep it after he graduates Boot Camp or will the Navy still say no-way?

I will send some things for my son but I need to know if any of you have any phone number of Counselor or Minister to send and talk to them is a Bible, and I tried to call the phone they gave me but no one answers is very important, thanks for the help I can give. My son is on hold for A school at GL also. His PIR was 12/4/09. After in dock (?) week they were given indefinite hold papers. He is there for AECF ET training. He does alot of cleaning the ship, eating and cleaning and then liberty. They don't give them books for class. He is going to check into taking some college classes on line as he will take his laptop back after leave.

Probably not going to happen that he will be able to get a head start. And the hold times can be quite lengthy for some of the schools with long duration and little turnover. It's not like they are issued textbooks....tons of the classes are self-paced on the computer. Have patience..........

We were told our son might be on hold till the A-school has room. It could be several weeks. Anitoli wants to get a head start on his classes while he is on hold.

My son PIR's 1/8/10 and we still don't know when A school starts. All we know for sure is that it is in GL. I doubt you recruit would have any time in boot to get started studying anyway.
