No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny
Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.
RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Phone Call!!!. just got a phone call from my son, it was static and hard to hear but he said he was doing good. it lasted about 1 min, better than nothing

Playing the Sousaphone, Sousa was always a hero of mine. Of course, he didn't invent it, a bandsman did. My great uncle Gus played drums in Sousa's Marine Band, and then in his commercial band. He then went on to play with Paul Whiteman.

When my dad was at GLs, it was in 1945 or 46, I'm not sure. 1/2 the facility was a German Navy/Marine prisoner of war camp. The Red Cross found the prison was below standard. So the Navy swapped. The recruits were marched past the prisoners and took the prison barracks, and the Germans took theirs. Dad thought it was really funny, 20 years after the fact.

JPS played on the parade grounds of Great Lakes when he started the Navy Band! The parade field in on the "Mainside" part of the base, the Naval Training Center.

I know about the different types, but didn't know about the event. It sounds like it could be very cool. My son (and me) is a Freemason, and belongs to the same lodge that John Phillips Sousa was a member of. On Sousa's birthday there will be a concert at his grave, played by the Marine Band.

Steve, Merry Tuba Christmas is a movement that is taking hold across the country. A large group of tubas (there are many types), usually 100-150 get together in a public place and play Christmas carols. It is very cool. My son has played the last 4 years, but, not this one.
